Couldn't tell you I'm afraid. I bet Dave's used one though, where is he when you need him...?

I've never used any electrical compass, YET! Sorry!
Blimey!! A gadget you haven't used!!!
 One for Santa's list perhaps?
I must admit to having more than a passing interest in aquiring one :)
It's on ebay Dave, and I think I heard it whispering your name in a seductive way...
Shut Up Smeagle! You're always trying to distract me with promises of shiny things ;-) I have my Precious already, it's called iPaq :)
Does this make you Frodo...? Where's Gandalf??? Is Jon Doran Sauron?????
Gandalfs already a member and I see Jon as more of a ring wraith myself.
And I'm more Bilbo, though passing the use of a precious to Darren C (who therefore must be Frodo).
Nice. Can't see any orcs, although we did have a troll the other day...

A friend has got an electric compass and it has its uses.... but. It is fine to walk on a bearing in that you rotate it (like a normal compass) and then tell it when you get to the bearing you want. It is however, useless to take a bearing off of a map (unlike a normal compass) and unless anyone can say different it does less than a normal compass.

 ah, technological retardment eh?
can't sit it on your map, batteries last 500hrs, unlikely to last for decades, takes up more room, weighs more,
anything missing? please add own comments
I'm still perfectly happy with my type 4. Can't see the need for anything else personally...
So what do you do on the top of the 'gorms or Kinder in a whiteout (yes, old enough to remember whiteouts on Kinder!) when your compass battery dies?
I'd never trust my life to something with batteries.

Recta GLOBEMASTER TURBO 20 (DS 56) ? Ok its not cheap (£38) and Recta do cheaper sighting compasses with adjustable declination, but it don't arf set quick.
"ah, technological retardment eh?" weighs more plus you may want to carry spare batteries to be safe in case they run out, if they last 500 hours (21 days non stop), I wouldn't remember when I put them in.
and you probably need to carry an 'old fashioned' compass for backup anyway
