You know those 'emergency dental kits' you can buy? I got one from the dentist after my last check-up but you can buy 'em all over.

Anyway - tonight a crown worked loose. Loose? It fell in me lap. It could have been much, much worse :O

I didn't want to have to make an emergengy appt at the dentist tomorrow because we're off to Wasdale early in the morning for a few days (yay!!) and it would have made us late by several hours. So I tried the 'emergency crown cement' stuff.

At first I became rather worried as it came as a white bit and a hardener - 'Araldite' crossed my mind (thinking that epoxy resin isn't exactly tissue-friendly) but I tried it any way and it works! Three hours later and it's still firmly in. It'll do the job till I have time to go to the dentist next week.

This kit will also act as an emergency filling etc and comes with a set of instruments and a duff dental mirror and full instructions. I can fully recommend anyone travelling to take one.

Wouldn't fancy giving myself a filling!

No drilling, honest! But would you rather have a cavity which is sensitive to anything hot or cold (including winds) for a fortnight or more?

Cyanoacrylate adhesives are used in orthodontic work, and in other medical applications ('Glustitch' etc).

Personally, if I could do me own filings rather than some sadistic b*stard dentist git, I would. Actually, the dentist i've found here in Cumbria is lovely. Kind, tolerant and patient of a raving, cowardly gibbering idiot like myself who turns into jelly every time I see 'the chair'. The last git I saw down south shouted at me for taking too many deep breaths (due to nerves)before he started drilling and told me I was being silly. He also told me I needed 4 fillings. Cos he shouted, I never went back to him and haven't been since and that was 4 years ago. I go to the dentist up here and he tells me I only need one filling??? So not only was the git down south a bullying sadistic shite, but he was also a corupt lying b*stard as well. I HATE DENTISTS!

Can you imagine having to go to someone in some far foreign country like Nepal or Peru....Eeeeek! Give me my own filling kit anyday. Good idea if you ask me.

who'd be a dentist anyway. It's up there with a gynocologist. At least the dentist has a much better chair ;-)

The un-needed fillings thing... yes, I've often wondered. I also wondered if getting a dental plan with my dentist would reduce the possibility of this; anything for them to reduce the amount of work they have to do on your teeth.

BTW, I understand that there's a big difference in schools of thought between British dentistry and French dentistry. Whereas the British tend to drill beyond the decay, into healthy dentine to ensure all the decay is removed, the French stop as soon as healthy dentine is reached. The consequence is that we need anaesthetic as healthy dentine objects to being drilled, but the French don't regularly use anaesthetic; they stop drilling at the first sign of pain...

Of course that could all be hearsay, or just the practice of a minority, but I heard it from someone who grew up in France.

Aye, I had a rogue dentist in Aberdeen some 20 yrs ago. My scrap metal value soared when he treated me!

We move back to Inverurie 3 yrs ago after 3 yrs near Forfar and now I can't get a dentist anywhere for 25 miles in any direction. I tried going private, offering cash incentives etc, no dice.

Grampian dentistry is the pits!

Dont make the mistake I did with a temporary filling that seemed to be OK and thus left in place for 2months. A root canal is not fun!
