 Steve -
I think what you had in mind are something like Rohan Essentials, which claim to be "totally waterproof, highly breathable and incredibly comfortable"
Haven't tried them myself, but they are probably lighter than Paramo and and also less likely to wet out and fall down!

sounds too good to be true.
Which usually means it is.....

Craghopper Aquadry trouser are good - kept me dry in some very wet conditions - only problem is that they are lined which makes them too warm for summer - ok for spring/autumn use though

Some great garments here, but try getting them in size 38in. waist with a 27in.inseam!I can't do tidy surgery on the leg length when there's a zip etc. on the side.Paramo probably have the best size range but their Cascadas are too long for me in my waist size.A factory alteration makes them too pricey.I'm resigned to cheap and cheerful overtrousers, unfortunately.I believe there is a better size range in the USA,but it's a long way to go to buy gear!

Oops - tha should have been Rohan 'Dry' Essentials.
William - have you tried Cioch Direct. They do a made to measure service and use the same directional materials as Paramo.

If you do opt for some cheap waterproof overtrousers a good pair is the Drilite pant by Mountain Equipment - available with a full length zip which makes getting them on over boots / crampons effortless unlike smaller zip lengths

DavidG-thanks.I'm aware of Cioch. Leigh-thanks but I doubt if they'll be a decent fit for me "off-the-peg".

I was just looking into this holy grail of trousers myself... has anyone had any experience with the Sprayway 'All Day' rainpant? According to Sprayway: "As the name suggests these are not an overtrouser, but rather a contemporary styled stretch pant that can be worn all day regardless ot the weather, keeping out any rain that should fall." Cave and Crag has them here.

From this month's Trail magazine's Used and Abused: Sprayway All-Day Rainpant: ...But I tramped all day on Dartmoor in them and they didn't leak (except in a rather pesky place - the fly) and - here's the thing - I didn't sweat. Now that's a miracle. Verdict not a revolution, but good enough.

I have recently purchased some RAB Event Trousers (they wasnt cheap), the reasons being are 1. They fit in the leg length (well an inch longer would be ideal) 2. Event Fabric (speaks for itself) 3. They have a zip fly 4. They are not as wide and flappy as most other waterproof pants i have tried or seen, but they can still be worn over a baselayer or straight over your trousers. 5. They have loops around the waist for a belt - useful for overtrousers. 6. They have virtually full length leg zips. 7. They are light and packable.
I will post in the reviews about these pants as soon as i feel i have tested/had them long enough.

I've used the Sprayway Rainpants on some rough days around Ben Nevis last October and on the Black Mountains in December in the snowclouds. Very comfortable, robust, kept me dry and warm with no sweating - absolutely first class. Your in-tent administration has to be good as, instead of taking off wet overtrousers and stuffing them away, you are packing away wet trousers (and getting straight into your sleeping bag. Putting them back on the following morning was uncomfrotable for about five minutes until the wind dried them out. All-in-all, a cracking bit of kit.
