Have any of you out there tried these freeze dried meals before? Thinking of getting some for next year to cut down on weight for wildcamp somewhere. They make breakfast, dinner and pud's, re-hydrate with hot or cold water in around 8min, and I beleive they are used as Artic Rations by the MOD, so they should have plenty of calories. Any comments? :-)
Nasty things in my experience, you're better off picking up choice dried goodies from supermarkets - think pasta, instant couscous, quick porridge sachets with dried milk etc. Obviously taste is a matter of opinion, but the majority of the dried camping food I've tried has been massively uninspiring and a real morale killer.
Key is how long stuff takes to cook. Longer boil times = more fuel = more weight.
Its still a good idea to try at home first though, as although I found quite a few meals I liked, there were a couple that tasted a bit like sawdust mixed with vommit.
I once had a freeze dried chicken curry, think it was New Zealand army issue. I have to say, it was gorgeous, quick & easy to prepare. Far tastier than the British army boil in the bags. I've never had any other freeze dried stuff though, so maybe it was an exception.
or you could buy a food dehydrator and make your own - there are 2 Ezidri dehydrators on Ebay starting at £99 each, £6.50 p&p (sounds expensive but same price as about 20 ready meals). It does take a long time to dehydrate food though - baked beans took 10 hours!
Lived on Raven dehydrated meals for about 10 days in Canada, some of the meals were a lot better then others. Fortunately I haven't tried them since and I can't remember which ones were better than others as it was a few years ago
