The article on Haglofs new LIM Ultimate PacLite jacket being the lightest one out there is wrong if you take into the equation products from across the pond.
It is my understanding that this is the lightest PacLite jacket available on the market today. Outdoor Research’s Zealot is 7.7oz for a large, WOW that is light but it has no pit zips.

Not made from PacLite but even lighter 6.6oz is Patagonia’s new Specter jacket.

 must be australian...

Oh sorry guys, I was not thinking and posted the weights in ounces (oz). I am use to posting on US forums so I have become accustomed to posting using ounces and pounds. I am actually from Canada but posted these in ounces because they are American products.
So 7.7oz is 218g and 6.5oz is 184g
Here is a good website for converting.

These jackets may be getting lighter but it seems we have to sacrifice some things to get that lightness, for example it looks to me as though the OR Zealot does not have any hand pockets or cuff adjustment. An outdoor jacket without any hand pockets is silly to me, for example if you took it out in winter (or even a cold autumn/spring in some places) and you lost your gloves or left them behind then you could possibly be in a right old state if you could not protect your hands from bad weather.

sorry, being a bit of a luddite here. 50gm, 100gm - does it matter?

The haglofs Lim jacket cetainly sounds light but then.......
"The sacs come in three sizes: 60+15 (3600 grammes), 75+15 (3800 grammes) and 90+20 (4000 grammes)"
Cough, splutter!!! These sacks really do complement the Lim jacket don't you think??
Those are by far the heaviest sacks I've ever seen! I thought my Bergahus Quartz 65+10 at 2700g was a heavy rucksack. Looks like I was wrong.

There's a lighter jacket (actually smock/pullover, like the Specter) on the Europe side of the pond, although I don't believe it's on the market yet: the Montane 180, which is supposed to be 180g. Anyone seen this or know when it's going to be available?
|
 |
The Topo sacks are designed to carry ultra heavy expedition type loads, not for a weekend in the Lakes! If you are carrying all your food for a 2 week trip (no chance to resupply in the wilderness), mountain tent, 4 season bag, stove + fuel and most importantly climbing hardware you will very quickly find the limitations of a 2kg pack - it will not support the load and your spine properly. We also do lightweight backpacking sacks - see the LIM range, but Topo's are built for a specific purpose, and that's to carry stupidly heavy loads over harsh terrain and in comfort!

I have a Montane 180 in a size small and it weighs 220g. A large must be another 50g at least. Quite a clever trick but not one I will fall for again.

call that light? (hmmm memories of monty python here) montane themselves top that with the featherlite H2O that weighs in at 100g ...no pockets mind
Gus you said it yourself "stupidly heavy loads" simple answer is cut your weights the arctic 1000 (or whatever it was) guys managed a lot further for a lot longer in about the harshest conditions feasible with what was basically a glorified dry bag...use smart gear choices and a rucksac that heavy should never be needed imho.
just my two penneth ;)

I've been considering the Montane 180 for a while now and only just found out about the new LIM. I've already got a heavy duty Mountain Equipment jacket for winter extremes and was after a lightweight waterproof shell suitable to UK's later spring through October. But now I have a quandry, not sure which way to jump but the thought of no hand pockets is an interesting one. Anyone using either jacket at the mo have a comment? Cheers
