I've been using Black Diamond velcro gaiters for 5 years in winter in the Pyrenees and Alps and can't fault them.
Previously used Mellos zip and velcro but the zips just numb your hands and finally bust leaving you to use the velcro.
Any gaiter using strong materials, cordura etc., with good wide velcro should be OK.
I've never had snow stopping the velcro from fastening.

If your gaiters silt up then you could always rinse off the silt. Using water. It's usually easy to find when you need to wear gaiters. If it isn't, because you're in snow, then where does the silt come from?

Not really silt, more like grass and all kinds of fibreous gunk! Neither hand not machine washing helped!

But then, they were cheap.
