 Since I replaced my Tripple Point Jacket with a Nice Aspira Jacket from P###mo, I keep getting hasseled to ditch the old jacket!
The thing is its perfectly servicable it just stinks, and I can't seem to get rid of the smell.
So what do I do?
Would pure soap be more effective than say techwash?
I know I can't use normal washing powders etc because of the wetting agents.
Also how would I then reproof it?
Wash in or Spray?

 Dave, I wash my various Triplepoint jackets in soap flakes and they don't smell - or maybe I just don't notice???
I would have thought tech wash would have worked too though!
Regrading reproofing, you might not need to bother. Tumble drying it (after it is already dry) for 40 - 60 minutes should wet out any DWR that is already there and might be good enough. Failing that, if it has a lining then you would need to use the spray, otherwise you could use the wash in. I'd just use the spray as you can use as much or little as you want.

 Dave, echoing what Chris said, I've washed both my TP jackets in soap flakes and they came out fine. Having said that, I've never let them get to the "stinky" stage :o)
As for re-proofing, the spray works fine but it's fiddly. Ironing (lowest setting) also works.

 Dave, you could try gently rubbing in neat Techwash or a strong solution of soap flakes into the 'problem' areas - sweaty armpits maybe? Then wash as normal.
I find anything a bit whiffy benefits from hanging out on the line in the sunshine to dry. If you normally tumble dry, this may be worth a try.
Ditch an old jacket? Noooo never throw anything away:)

Got some pure soap flakes from waitrose, so I'll give it a wash tonight.

 A short while ago I had to deal with a waterproof that had been left rolled up damp (not mine!). It stank and washing in soap didn't get the smell out (there's no reason why soap flakes should be any more effective than TechWash - they are both pure soap). I hung it on the washing line for quite a few days (five I think) during which time the sun shone and it rained. It was then fine.

 Grangers do a version of their technical washing liquid called Extreme Cleaner Plus which contains stuff that inhibits smells, so that might be an option.

The problem with using any soap based cleaner is that it will not be amazingly effective at removing built up oily grime.
To do this, you should either have it dry cleaned (if that is an option) or wash it in a normal detergent.
There is no reason not to use a detergent on most outdoor gear as the residue left behind can be effectively be removed by washing in Nikwax Tech Wash, before reproofing with TX-Direct.

This is the line I usually adopt, following your boss' similar statements, and my experience. However, I am aware that some people (who I trust not to be eejits) have had problems with Patagonia's Deluge DWR treatment that doesn't seem to respond in this way.
As Product Dev Chemist, you might like to investigate this? Because Patagonia is so reassuringly expensive, you wouldn't want to ruin the excellent DWR by washing in detergent.

Washed my Triple Point Lowe Alpine Jacket with Nikwax Tech wash & then reproofed with TX Direct,using a washing machine the inner shell disintergrated,possibly too much reatment used ? note the jacket was approx 15 years old & was not providing a waterproof cover,first time wash , also this was a last ditch effort. Any recommendations for a new jacket?

 Many of those smelly bacteria don't appreciate exposure to UV light - so hanging your kit out in the sun will help get rid of them, and thus the stink.

When you say 'inner shell' do you mean the lining fabric, or do you mean the coating on the actual shell fabric? Either way, I'm not too surprised at either of them going in a 15-yr-old jacket. I'd say it's very unlikely to be due to the Tech Wash or TxDirect.
