Hi,

Has anyone used the new shockproof, waterproof Olympus MJU1030 camera on the hill?  Is it any good, are the pictures any good?

 Grateful for some thoughts.

I have the older 725, looks the same aside from fewer pixels.

I've been very pleased with it.  Very light and compact so fits into a pocket and is genuinely waterproof (I needed something I could take kayaking that didn't object to being underwater in an unplanned manner).  I haven't tested the shock-proofing, and don't intend to!

Battery life is good.  I carry a spare but have never needed it yet (even away for a week, though I'm not a prolific photographer).  The pictures are okay, I guess... not being a photographer I wouldn't like to say, but at my level of snapper rather than auteur they're fine, better than my old 35mm Olympus XA3.

The only real Gotcha is there's no viewfinder, just the LCD screen, and it can be problematical seeing exactly what you're shooting in bright light conditons.  That is a genuine downside, but a viewfinder would mean more weight and more bulk so you'd lose one of the best aspects of the camera if you cured it.

Exec summary, if I lost it, i'd get another (or probably the newer 1030).

i  bought the 1030 because my digi slr was just to heavy.

is it any good ? i think i am happy with it

but like any compact it misses out on not being able

to fit a UV filter.

plus points.. fast start/ easy menu/28mm equiv lens/

good batt life/

not dissapointed yet.

Slightly off thread but just a word of warning.

Do not get a non waterproof digital camera damp at all.  Ive just knackered my Canon Powershot when it got wet even though it was in a supposedly waterproof Lowe bag.

So thats another £250 up the spout.

The guy at the repair place said that if you get a digi camera wet take the batteries out immediatally and let it dry out naturally for as long as possible.  He reckons if your lucky you may get away with it.

Sadly, even then you're likely to be buggered.  Most digi cameras have small backup batteries inside to keep the RTC going.  Then there's the 600V flash capacitor...

I lost a nice little Nikon to water on a very wet walk around Buttermere.  I took the batteries out straight away, but when  I opened it up (not working), the insides were full of green copper rot...
