The Defeat of John Hawkins

A Biography of his Third Slaving Voyage by Rayner Unwin

A swashbuckling adventure of `daring do'  and other totally un PC goings on.

Excellent

What  "No Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas" by Hunter S Thompson?

But back on the walking topic "Autobiography of a Supertramp" W H Davies and lets not forget Eric Newby or John Wyatt writings

Anything by Eric Newby but especially, Love and War in The Appenines and  A Short Walk in The Hindu Kush.

I found The Beckoning Silence by Joe Simpson to be a great read. I like reading about Mountaineering and the philosophical meaning and all that malarkey. Chris Bonningtons biographies are good too, I Chose To Climb in particular talks about how he got into climbing and his progress.

One Man's Mountains by Tom Patey is absolutely brilliant. It's mostly a collection of climbing journal articles describing major ascents - from the Old Man of Hoy to first ascents in the Himalayas - that he was involved in, but it's a lot better (and much funnier) than that makes it sound. He's particularly good describing the people he climbs with - Joe Brown, Don Whillans, Hamish MacInnes and Chris Bonnington, as well as a lot of less well known people. There's also a section of purely satirical articles and a collection of his songs.

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson - no matter how many times I dip back into this book it has always brought a smile to my face.

For anyone who loves the Scottish hills

Very evocative & entertaining in a style that, whilst being from a different era, totally captures the beauty & moods of the hills
