Hopefully this one doesn't turn out like the Elementum line.

I bought their THOUSAND DOLLAR Elementum Terra and well, let's just say that it's not what you'd expect from the most expensive ABC watch.

Want to see seconds? Nope.
Day of the week? Nope.
Compass declination? Aaand, nope.
Net altitude change? You guessed it, that's a no.
Second time zone? No, sir.

It'd be silly to ask about the storm alarm, or sunrise times, like the $200 dollar Core has. None of that. All I'm saying, careful before you buy these things. Don't assume that anything seemingly obvious will be what you think.

The full review (hey Suunto, my blog gets 50,000+ visits a month!)

it probably didn't occur to you to find out exactly what you were and weren't getting before you parted with $1000.

"features tailored to the athlete " whew! leaves me out of it then.

is day of the week, compass declination, net altitude change and a second time zone of interest to an athlete? not being one (or remotely near one) i wouldn't know.

but...no calorie count it seems. how will i be able to know how many more mars bars to eat or pints of guinness for the after-exercise controlled warm-down (compression optional depending how busy the pub is).

Would be great with OS Grid. No OS makes the GPS pretty useless in the uk mountains! I like it, but won't be investing until the OS support ( at least for spot locations) is confirmed. Also I assume you can order the non HRM version but still use the HRM function if you already have a Suunto HRM belt from one of the t series?

THe lack of OS Grid is a serious flaw if you want to use it in the mountains in the UK, for anything other than a google plot of where you have been. It currently only has Latitude/Longititude, UTM & MGRS. It's difficult to accurately locate a Lat/long on an 1:25K OS map and the Harvey 1:40K only has OS Grid. As far as I know UTM/MGRS don't feature on UK outdoor maps!

You mention Suunto are looking at grid references as an option. Would this be a firmwire upgrade or a "new watch" upgrade should they decide to do it and I bought one tomorrow?

You mention in the article that Suunto are considering an upgrade to feature grid references. Would this be a "firmwire" upgrade or a "new watch" upgrade if I bought one tomorrow?

Also, do you actually think they will do it or is it just talk? Very useful feature to have IMO

I like my suunto core all black but it is rather unnecessary. The temp and altitude are very poor but the compass is cool. Looks nice too, which is the main thing for a hardcore mountain athlete.

Very undecided on gps in general. Let's face it you need a map. And I am a poor navigator.
