It was almost certainly Brecon MRT out on exercise, Taz. I do sometimes wonder about those ill-attired families going up late in the day and whether they'll put their kids off mountains for good

patchy snow in the beacons at the mo, some of the paths were a bit "interesting"

Temperatures due to plummet again tonight and stay low for the rest of the week.

I found that some of the ground around Cwm Cerrig-Gleisiad and Fan Frynych were completely saturated due to frozen ground underneath not allowing melting snow to be absorbed if temps plummet, that will make things even more interesting

Nice one, much better conditions than Saturday!

There was a fair bit of snow (knee deep) on the 'Tommy Jones' track, and very little on top. It was colder than I anticipated as well though my son refused to wear his hat after a while as he had a warm head! The gps kept us nicely on track in the fog.

lots of fog in the past few days in the beacons...navigation was a bit tough on times

I found the same thing with navigation and ended up of the wrong path haha. Snow patchy until near the top however enjoyed the ridge walk from Cwmgwdi and car park was easy to get to. Not too sure I would be saying the same if it was covered in snow. Saw a few people using crampons however I didn't feel the need until I come back down from the summit of Pen y fan. Although I could of easily done this without I wanted to try out my new crampons The path between Pen y fan and Corn Du was very iced up and caution was needed descending between the two. Would have been an even better day if I wasn't stuck in cloud above 400m and could have enjoyed the views Have to agree with the cold. Was just wearing a fleece most of the way up andd the coat and hat quickly went on upon reaching the summit of pen y fan. The hot tomato soup was much needed!

Good thread. Thanks, all. Heading up there this weekend for a couple of days of walking. I don't think we'll attempt anything too high as we're not that experienced, but might get some over-boot-spike things in case it is really icey. Better safe than sorry.
Have got ViewRanger GPS with the landranger maps, so will be ok in case of fog.

Chris, recommend you also have paper map - a couple got lost at the top end of the Rhondda hills last weekend because they were navigating with a smartphone and the battery died on them in the cold! You probably do anyway, but just to make sure...

Thanks, Kate. Good call! I do have the paper map, and I've been dying for an excuse to actually use my compass.

I had to use my crampons the other day due to water run off that had refrozen on the pathway
