Mike, all landies are thirsty, petrol - eye wateringly so. TD5's are not too bad as the Disco gets about 30mpg, a brick like Defender slightly less. All 4x4's are expensive to fuel as the transmission eats so much power, even part-time systems with free-wheeling front hubs still have the weight penalty. That said, if you like tinkering and doing your own maintenance an older landy without computers can be very cheap to run when you put servicing and parts into the equation - assuming you aren't using it for commuting 50miles to work and back every day! The Disco I put into the local garage, mot and service usually sets us back a couple of hundred+. Servicing the old 109 is less than 50quid for oil, filter, 8 spark plugs, and wiper blades, but I do it myself.

Cheers Beth. I could do most of that myself. I haven't changed a spark plug, or cleaned a carb for 20 years though! My annual mileage is only about 4/5 thou. Four miles to work, and maybe 100 at the weekend. As i asked earlier, would a thief/vandal find an old Landy a tempting target in the street? I live in drug central.

There are normally Land Rover breakers around ( on line as well ) and parts are easy got 2nd hand ) Mike, Its too modern for me though , Beths the one to ask.

Ah sorry. Umm, probably not. A hard top is relatively secure, an oldie will need new barrels in the locks as they get worn and can be opened with a screwdriver. If it's petrol an extra not-so-obvious switch/relay in the fuel electrics can slow the scrotes down. Diesel is hard enough to start anyway if you dont know what to do. Any ol aftermarket alarm can be fitted to deter. Paint it army green with a brush and no-one will want to nick it anyway!

I can remember a mate having an old Landy, i think it was a Defender, and you could open the windows by pushing your palms against them, and bearing down. Maybe not.

Evening all. I am back online and living in the countryside now. I don't quite have a view to rival AR's but it is not too bad for the south. A small place for little old me but I have a balcony!
Oh look.... there's a christmas munky on BBs Balcony...... has your little pal gone on holiday down South AR?
Well spotted! He seems happy enough in his new home and, like me, enjoys the balcony with a view - but it is a bit parky at the moment.

I took it to Fionn Loch as well < suppose you want proof > edit, is there one in GB's photo ?? another edit, Mmmm, perhaps slightly more than a bottle of wine was consumed .
Nope, still on my first class, but hey ho.....

Landies are a way of life, not just for xmas Buy a cheap jap 4x4, or something like a Frontera, and put good open mud tyres on it for the winter months. It'd still go anywhere, cheaper in fuel andmuch more comfortable!
