I have a rather fine quote for you to use in your project for school upon your grandad there, Taryn. I saw it and thought it immediately summed up very nicely Pat' Gunsons life in mountaineering; and too I think perhaps it is especially of significance, maybe too considering respect of his involvemet in that famously heroic high altitude rescue of fellow climbers.

Thank you Trevor, I was looking at getting some quotes to use and that is a perfect one . its just a shame all the picture we have are on his slides rather than photos ill have to look for some everest pics to show instead. I do the short talk on Thursday ill be glad when its over tho. one question I have to ask is how did the first poster (sorry forgot your name) know/find out about my Grandad Death? its just like I said I was amazed to see this post in the first place

That's great there, Taryn. Do not worry about the talk though, as I'm sure you will perform wonders there, have no fear. Dave's post of 25/05/2005 appears to have been initiated after he heard a radio 4 news item reporting Pat's passing I believe; but he can certainly confirm this for us all when next he reads this thread, if he can still recall the exact details of course all this time later on, that is!

I think likely too that if you went onto the climbers forum website at UKC, you would find there similar mention of Pat's life remembered as well. Have you tried at all looking there too perhaps yet, Taryn?

http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/ UKC link here. NB Lots of OM forum members are also UKC forum members, thus I suspect you will find bits of interest to your project there too, in what is arguably the more specialised climbing forum for the UK. The forum here at OM is more of a generalised outdoors interests forum, for folks wanting to discuss all of the many and varied different outdoors pursuits together in one place you see.

Humm! I've tried using their site search function for you there, but not met with much luck at all sadly really, aside finding the two old photos of Pat from 1981 there at the link I gave before. It appears that their site too, like our own great OM, desperately needs a better search function put in! Might I then suggest instead that you maybe sign up to their specialised climbing forum too then perhaps. In that way you could duplicate your introductory post you used on here. Then I'm sure someone on there will no doubt post back to you pretty quickly with some personal memories of your fine grandad, Taryn.

By the way Taryn, how did you yourself find that original post of Dave's on here then? Did you just find it by Googling your grandad's name via a search engine online?

I can't remember for certain how I first heard, but think it may have been on Radio 5 Live late at night. I knew about your Grandad already through working on the recent Army Everest Expedition website and talking to many of the team. As an outdoor journalist I keep an eye on what's going on with quite a few websites and the news spread very quickly.

All a question of confidence really! I'm sure you will do fine there, Taryn. As they say helpfully on the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 'Don't Panic'.

Hello everyone, I'm Taryn's younger sister, I have been reading all the comments and I would just like to thank you all for all the lovely comments about my grandad, he was a great man and a real hero in my eye's and to see everything on here makes me proud to be his grand child. My mum and uncle are planning on putting the slides onto a website and somehow get the Lows gully video on their also, but they have been planning to do it for quite some time now, so who knows how long it might take, but when it does happen we will make sure to let you all know.

A very warm welcome too to you upon the forum, Siobhan! Hey, the more Gunsons on here the better in my opinion!
