Can anyone recommend a portable digital scale that is relatively easy to obtain and can weigh up to 500g with accuracy?

Funny as ray is being Ed, Try the hippy shops in Newcastle mate, where there is a bong there is a set of scales

Just ask your students

Failing that try the local fishing shop, even on line fishing tackle shops , you should find something suitable

Thanks both; I do not want to bother with online if I can help it.....so maybe it is the drug dealers for me

Use digital kitchen scales, then 'calibrate' them by putting coins in placcy bags to make up 3 checkweights covering the scale's range.  Then take your weights to the post office and weight them there.  If there are significant differences make yourself a table of corrections.

I can recommend these that I bought a while ago from a kitchen shop at Cheshire Oaks - sure they were only about a tenner though

They go up to 5 kg which is fine for weighing individual items though maybe not a full sack (ooh-err)

Then go to a fishing tackle shop and buy one of the things they sell for weighing your catch.  Only problem is they are set to multiply true weight by 5 to make the catch sound more impressive.

A bit like Matt C's scales, except his divide by 5!

Mine are kitchen scales made by Salter and I got them pretty cheaply from Argos. I particularly like them because they make my Laser Comp lighter than the one fb weighed with his!

(But mine are accurate )

Matt you are the only drug dealer I know that doesnt 'cut' with talc owing to your scale's in-built profit margin.

Not that I know any other drug dealers.

Pssssssssst can you spare a sixteenth until the end of the week?
