Trekking pole repair
How do you get the tip off?

I have several poles, a cheapo pair and one that says it is a Lekisport Titan Denali.

One of the cheapo's has lost the carbide insert to the tip - the metallic part that extends, what, 3mm from the very end. There's paobably a name for it but I don't know it.

The lekisport has an intact tip but a badly mangled lower section. I'd like to take the lekisport tip and put it on the cheapo to have a pair of poles again.

Can this be done? I see Leki sell tips (the lekisport is NOT a leki) so theirs must come off but do others? How do I try to do this?

Many pole tips glue on using heat-melting glue (I forget the technical term). So try heating up the tip with a hot air gun or hairdryer, or in a bowl of hot water, then see if it'll pull off with pliers. If it fits your other pole you'd be best to glue it on the same way, not just push it on.

Thanks for this. I'll give it a go and let people know if I've been successful getting the tip off.

I have had to replace the tips on my Leki poles a few times. Striking them (obviously downwards) with a wooden mallet sometimes works and then trying pliers. On other occasions I have used a small saw to make a groove in it and then forced it open with a screwdriver. This last option means that the tips cannot be reused of course.

Right, without reading Lindsay's post (thanks) I had a quick go with a hammer (no mallet available) and no dice.

The hot water worked a treat though, a minutes immersion in boiling water and it came off with a quick twist of a mole grip.

Thanks both for the ideas, where would we be without OM?
