 I'm thinking of buying a floor for my Hex 3 and cutting a 'slice' out of it for a vestibule. I use a bug-bivvy during midgie season, but want a bath-tub floor for winter use.

I'm going to cut a slice out of it at the door and fold up the edges to continue the existing bathtub floor. Think of a pie-chart minus a sixth. More chance of rain/mud/snow being dragged in during autumn/winter and i want a sheltered area to cook and put on/take off gear.
I have the full mesh inner, but only take that if there's 2 of us, as it's a bit heavy.

However, paper doesn't drape like fabric does, or have anisotropic properties like a woven fabric (especially ripstop). So your paper prototype won't be very accurate for clothing or tents. As I found with the newspaper tent...

Seen that John. Cheers. His 2/3 groundsheet is just a flat piece of fabric. The Hex 3 groundsheet has a bathtub floor that rises about 6" and attaches to the peg-out points. I have a few groundsheets myself but want something that can handle Autunm/Winter floods! 
I ordered it from him by the way.

Yes using paper for a full size mock up of a tent doesn't let you see how much the fabric gets out of shape ,I've made a couple of tents/tarps and it is a right bugger trying to cut it right let alone sewing it.

I did something similar with the Hex/Shangri La bathtub groundsheet for when using as a solo tent. I simply cut one in half - or actually a few inches wider - to give me enough to fold up to make another bathtub edge. Seems fine but haven't tried it in the field yet. It may need some extra support for the new bathtub edge, in which case I will sew in a couple of loops or some kind of tubular stiffener like a large drinking straw, through which I can insert a couple of ti-skewers to keep it up. Whilst shopping yesterday from Backpacking Light I had a chat with Bob who tells me they're considering producing a one man version of the nest. Sounds like a tremendous idea! My requests/desires - to keep weight minimal, would be that it - fills only half the tent - as this is the most you can use for sleeping due to the centre pole and if you want a larger covered area could always use piece of polycro etc.
- uses lightweight grounsheet material - say like the laser comp, as the Golite version is overkill and quite weighty
- uses the very light 'nanoseum' netting - as has v fine mesh and again keeps weight down.

Hi Mike, I've thought of one of those too - or alternatively their 'serenity' inner tent thingy. Also tried the six moon designs one, but it's just too skinny and restrictive so I sent it back. How's the head height with the bug bivvy? It looks like it would be on your head if you sat up - how's that feel? I'd quite like to be able to sit up in camp and still have the bug protection.

You can't sit up in it. I use it for sleep protection only, though there is enough room to read a book or similar if you wish. I use it mostly with a tarp, and carry a head net for sitting round camp. I'll only use the Hex during the summer if my son or daughter is along, then we carry the full mesh inner. For me, the Hex is more of a OCT - MAR single skin shelter.

Yes, I agree. The full Golite nest is way too heavy going solo and I also prefer using the Hex as a single skin shelter - but a lighter weight nest for half the tent, when going solo, would definitely extend the seasons and uses I could put it to.
