Monday Tip - Walk The Terrain Not The Area
Just because you're in the Peak or the Dales doesn't mean you don't need crampons.

They'll make people think the walks are harmless, but they're also terribly keen to turn to rivers of sheet ice once they get the chance.

Kind of yes and no - the paved bits were treacherous, but then so were the more 'natural' bedrock sections. I've also found some very interesting sections of narrow footpath local to me which are basically a narrow stream of unavoidable ice with a big drop to one side. Cracken Edge above Chinley if anyone's familiar with it...

Fair enough Think I was just remembering the path up to Sticks pass from sometime last year. That really wasn't sensible at all.

One thing - do microspikes actually work well on this? I've always been able to avoid so never tried. I know that remelted snow is tough, but we're talking thinnish layers of pure water ice here. Suppose they can't hurt!

Microspikes work very well on frozen paths like that.

Very much so Martin.

Absolutely spot on article btw, they are some very dodgy paths up in the PD and YD where microspikes are a big plus.

My wife went up Cracken Edge last Thursday, and mentioned the ice. After work on Friday, I went up Rushup Edge to Lord's Seat, I got some decent photos and used my Yaktraks in anger for the first time (they were a present for Christmas 2010). The path was very icy... The Yaktraks seem very well suited to mixed ground with thin ice but I wouldn't trust them on too steep a slope.

Which one you got Jim? I've got the very basic ones and whilst they are great for urban use (much more discreet than my Kathoolas), they proved terrible going up from Glossop to Bleaklow on an iced up rocky path, slipping off my boots all the times.

I was given Yaktrak pros

Worked fine on TNF Hedghogs, and felt secure.

Jon,

Would that be the climb up to the top going along what looks the side of a spoil slope?

One of these days I'm going to work out a quick way of adding images to the gallery without compressing them too much

Now here's some ice To be fair of course, the path isn't paved just fairly firm and depressed below its natural level. Very low level though. (its the lane going along into troutbeck.).

December last year so it was very cold indeed, which is perhaps needed to get this to happen.

You'd be walking on it as it was not there if you wore Microspikes!

Well it wasn't on the grass so I went round rather them bother to put them on. Maybe I should have to see though, as somehow still not totally convinced. Imagine I'll find out sometime

Anyhow it does nicely show how fun low level paths can get. If something like that had somehow turned out to be unavoidable....

(oh and I meant Dec 2010 of course.).

Alternative Monday Tip:

Walk the Terrain, not the Path...

i.e. if the path is a sheet of ice, consider walking off the path slightly.  Bearing in mind access rights, erosion/flora damage etc.

Even the Yaktraks are pretty good

I had no worries getting up this:

and the view down

Again, echoing what Jon mentioned, there were lots of people who were struggling because of inappropriate footware.
