I know this has been asked before, but the threads are old and things may have changed.

I'm probably going to go mac soon, but the only concern I have is that I'll not be able to use Memory Map without installing Windows.  Is there any other mapping software that uses mac and ideally would allow me to import my Memory Map log?

Also, is it possible to legitimately somehow transfer Windows from a laptop when I don't have the disks, as it came pre-installed?

Transfering the OS from one machine to another without disks is above my skill level!

 If you can ge a cheap version of Windows you could run it on the Mac under Virtualbox or similar.  This means you can run your windows OS at the same time as the Mac OS.  You then install memory map on windows & fire that up when you need it.

I did same on Linux - I have W7 & XP both installed on Virtualbox - XP for some legacy apps I still wanted & W7 just because I could & I got it with the PC.

I ran Mapyx Quo this way.  However with Virtualbox the hardware has to be compatable with the host OS as well as Windows & while I could share all my drives, printer, sound graphics etc my Lowrance GPS was not recognised.  I ended up running an old PC with XP just for Quo & internet.  

i run windows in Parallels. i needed parallels to run some windows programmes and have only recently got round to buying and loading windows 7.

anquet do a mapping programme for a mac which i bought to try out whilst not having windows to use tracklogs. the anquet mac mapping programme is almost criminally slow and is a PITA far greater than it's worth. it was this disgrace of a programme (hey it runs, or runs VERY slowly, on a quad core i7 processor with 8 gb memory) that finally prompted buying windows. tracklogs fair screams along quite happily in its windows shell.

it's a bloody expensive way to get a mapping programme from scratch but as you've already got the mapping it will be worth it. worth it only in the sense of how much do you value MM.

i don't think you'll be able to use the licence key you already have as it will for an oem one use only copy.

the mac is sooooo much nicer than windows by the way. you'll enjoy it.

If you don't have the licence key you can run Belarc Advisor (google it) - thay will give you a html results page with the license numbers of everyting on your PC, including the OS.  Worth saving that page - got me out af a jam in the past as I put all my disks in a folder & had lost the slip of paper with the licences written on.

Thanks to all.  I'll need to look at that Wine thing.  Looking elsewhere, it seems that there's nothing decent for mac, and Parky's put me right off trying Anquet.

I'm loathe to use Windows on mac, as it kind of defeats the purpose.  I have Office for Mac 2011 anyway for my daughter's macbook, with a spare licence (I think), and other than Photo Elements, which I don't mind paying for the latest mac/pc version, I can't think of anything other than mapping that I really want to use.

I might just hang on to my almost knackered 15 month old Samsung £660 waste of space (no, I'm not bitter, honest) and hope it works the odd time I need to use Memory Map.

I run Isys Mapwise50 under Linux running Wine, according to Isys it will run on Mac using Wine as well.

 Transfering a Windows licence to another machine is only possible if you have bought a genuine MS Windows licence yourself.  Most Window machines however are sold with a preinstalled OEM Windows licence which is limited to the original hardware and can not be transfered to other machines.
