I've just bought two 65 litre rucksacks from Tesco after seeing good reviews fro them on a couple of web sites.

I noticed a compass there too for about £5 and that includes a map case ... That seems too cheap for a vital piece of kit

I found my old scouting compass in my father's house, a Silva 4 model but it looks to have seen better days. The needle doesn't even lie horizontally in it's housing.

Is the Tesco compass OK, or should I go for a more well known name, at 2 or 3 times the price

 thanks !

I have some of the cheaper makes of compass copies like the Tchibo and Hi-Gear/Gelert ones. They are for the most part good for just basic walking use. I would not trust them for any more than that though myself.I would not go hitting a long trail or a big hill using them. I'd prefer to trust to a better make then for sure.

Lots of good compasses on offer now at the www.7dayshop.com. Recta ones are quite a good make I think.

Any good Zimbabwean kit in Tescos at the moment?

According to the Radio 4 Zimbabwean blog this morning, there's nothing left on their own supermarket shelves much at all. Not that the average person out there can afford to buy much at even if there were, with - what is it now - a million per cent inflation rate or something silly?

I brought my Tesco rucksacks back ... blamed my wife for buying them

I got two Vango rucksacks intead, also got my new Vango Spctre tent.

Will be up Crinke Grags next weekend, so looking forward to that.

I have not bought my stove yet ...

MSR Pocket Rocket seems my preferred option, but Optimus and Coleman seem good too.

Any ideas !

MSR Pocket Rocket was only just twenty quid the other day at the Field and Trek website.

Thanks for that Trevor

I actually ordered a Pocket Rocket from Field & Trek before I saw you reply

I also ordered a compass from ACtive8, but got an email saying it wasn't in stock. Pity because it was quite cheap and postage is free.

By chance though I found that there's a camping shop in Newcastle that I forgot all about, mainly because it way off the beaten track as far as the City CEntree is concerned. Quite cheap though, so I'll call there this week.
