http://www.discoverychannel.co.uk/survival_zone/environments/sea/water/index.shtmlWe are you see, here beginning to venture into the realms of the most wonderful survival at sea subject area. One of the very most interesting offshoots to survival studies as a whole.

The following would likely be your basic requirement for a solar still specification here. The Aquamate Solar Still turns seawater into freshwater.

This inflatable Solar Still doesn't require any energy and turns seawater into freshwater at a rate sufficient for one person per day.

This is essential kit for any grab bag as it packs small and weighs just 1075 g.

Aquamate Solar Stills are light, compact, float and very easy to use. They utilise solar radiation to distill and collect pure drinking water from sea or impure water. The still will produce 500-2000 cc (1-4 pints) of water per day and has been used by military and civilian services throughout the world for the past 40 years.

The Still packs neatly away to 26 x 23 x 7 cm. At a fraction of the cost of a mechanical or electrical unit, this Aquamate Solar Still is an ideal addition to the grab bag for any ocean-going yachtsman.

Features

  • Tear-open pack for emergencies
  • Easily inflated by mouth
  • Lanyard fixing
  • Pure water stored in separate pouch
  • High-visibility orange plastic
  • Proven reliability
  • Manufactured to ISO 9002
  • NATO Stock no. 4610-66-144-2646

Part No: SUR0450

http://ask.metafilter.com/92445/Are-there-lightweight-solar-stills-that-workA recent online discussion begun by someone like yourself here wishing to ask about the usefulness potentials of utilising these solar still products upon a long wilderness coastal walk. The results seem inconclusive, that the kit is the best space and weight occuying kit to take for such an application. I would argue though, on my own prior experience and on the case of the Circum-Baja expedition results in given book above, that the case for such kit being a real llifesaver in such conditions is however already greatly and reliably proven!

Hi Carl, just in case you don't see the Field and Trek oddities thread there, I was mentioning that the Field and Trek technical guys have resored the two water filters to the sale; now found again in sale equipment there at sixty quid each for the MSR and the Katadyn. You won't find them via seaching using their onboard site search engine though, nor by clicking on either of their water filter/purification product area headers most strangely! Silly Field and Trek!
