In a similar vein, Cammy, I heard that zoo regulations/legislation doesn't allow predators and prey to be in same enclosure. Maybe that is why the term "zoo" hasn't been used by Lister and the Listerenes yet.

I also read (in TGO a few months ago) that he wants to charge walkers a hefty sum for accessing the Munro's on his estate which would (quite conveniently for him) be inside the planned fenced area. Under his plans you would have to pay for access for the day and also pay for one of his staff to accompany you on your walk. He's at the madam I suspect!

Another reason then for me to get my leg sorted and get up that peak this summer. Oh-yeah.
Yeah I know - its kinda worrying to think that access to one of our Munro's might be barred.
TBH, I thought it was 'just' one route that was being 'lost'. Aye, here's a mention in Grough of "one" route to Seana Bhraigh being lost. Shame to lose any access. Bothy already been reclaimed by owner.
I think I did get it wrong in saying "Munro's" rather than Munro - I believe it is just Seana Braigh Duncan.
Not just Seana Bhraigh, the Corbett Carn Ban and (I think) a couple of Grahams. And that's just the baggers' tops
No feckin way are we losing access!
I'm stunned that the Beeb are giving over so much publicity to him (although Paddy would tell me that's cos I'm naive, shortly before going off on one about Licencing )

You can see how his PR people have handled it though. "Would you like to come and make a series about wild animals returning to Scotland?" What TV company wouldn't?

Lister has been doing some good PR. It's not just the BBC. He's had uncritical coverage in many magazines and newspapers, most recently the Daily Record and the Big Issue. In the latter magazine he said "To the ramblers, I say you don't have the right to roam" - completely disregarding the legal right of access in Scotland, which he seems to regard as just red tape to be brushed aside. He also says "I'd question any responsible human being that says they have a right to roam absolutely anywhere at the cost of nature" - so he's clearly saying that preventing access is for "nature", even when that means a fenced in enclosure with managed animals - hardly natural in fact. He talks about just 300 ramblers visiting the area a year so I think he believes that very few people will be concerned about a loss of access. He says he'll bring in 300 people a fortnight. At present combating his PR is all that can be done as he hasn't yet put in an application for his fence.

Cough, splutter - are you referring to the fence that was being shown to SNH in last night's programme? It looked like it was being constructed to me.

Money talks - it's frighteningly good PR.
Sounds like tripe about the volume of walkers per year though. That tends to be a standard line, North Chesthill towed out the same one with regard to the Inverar Munros.

I sent an angry e-mail to the Daily Record journalist who 'wrote' that story Chris. He e-mailed me back, asking for me to give my side in an interview. I'm afraid my bottle crashed, and i recommended yourself, in your MCoS capacity, and Cameron McNeish as better sources. I hope you don't mind!

Duncan, that was just a little fence that doesn't restrict access (there is a gate in it), not the huge one he wants to build. He had to agree to a gate to get that one built - it's basically a small enclosure for the wild boar. Mike, that's fine with me - no one's been in touch!
And he couldn't keep that small enclosure secure. Someone broke the gate open and let the boars escape!

 Not guilty. That time.

Sheesh, that's the small one! I half expected to see someone on a motorbike trying to jump it to get over the border. I wonder if we'll see any computer mockups of the main enclosure? As much chance as hearing the word "zoo" being mentioned by the proponents.
