Rob, glad you had a good time, looking forward very much to the longer report!

Sorry, wasnt very clear on the hut key thing. When i go across to norway, i use my BMC card and 100NOK deposit to get the relavent hut keys i need. The BMC is deemed to be a affilated or similar organization so i havent had any drama's about it. No luck on the website for the gear, though i dont need anymore haglofs or norrona kit..... HV - re huts, paid 100 NOK to buy a key, but we could have got our money back if we wanted, as a deposit. Useful insurance to have the key - and my son & his mate used it for 2 nights while mate rested from blisters (brand new boots!!). Being under 25, they got in for 50 NOK per night. There wasn't a need to show membership of anything - as the very helpful tourist info lady in Narvik said, 'we want people to use our huts!'. It'll be handy to have this one day, I expect, and saves the hassle of getting one and returning it.

Fair enough Rob, where i go "Rjukan" i have always had to present my BMC card, and paid the 100NOK deposit, and had to give the key back. I guess its different as to where you go!

As you can see Half Viking, the people in north Norway is much nicer than those in the south. I observed that you said the food in the self sevice huts were pricey. Well you can go to the next corner and see if they have something else on todays offer . Honestly can you tell me any other country that has such a trust in the average wanderer that even the food supplies are available without any control at all? The food in Norway is in general pricey compared to GB, and in addition it must be transported to the huts, reistered, aso and all this costs money. Those who thing ist pricey can either have their own food or just ignore eating that day. Never hurt anyone. Otto

Lol Otto I think the whole DNT hut system is wonderful. I've been a member for about 12 years now - I use it most in the winter for ski-touring but I maintain my membership even in years when I'm not going to Norway, simply because such a fantastic mountain amenity deserves support to help it operate and survive. There's nothing comparable in the UK. The nearest we have are mountain bothies or some of the simpler Youth Hostels, but they don't really fulfil the same role. And such an honesty system wouldn't stand a cat in hells' chance of working here in the UK!

norway is looking very inviting. (makes note to investigate)

Parky - just go! My mate's wife, after their 4 week trip by car this summer, said it was the only place she's been to which lives up to the postcards and brochures. And she's well travelled!

It's wonderful. It's such a feeling of freedom walking from hut to hut in the mountains - for days without crossing a road or coming across any other houses. Amazing.
