As for the good Mr Mear's wife, I did write a piece about that sad incident of her passing on the Trueways Survival School forum, just a little while after her death a while back ago. Very sad indeed that was, as she was really still only quite young. Ray later did a nice little bit in a weekend colour supplement - that my mum saw and saved for me - about how he had scattered her ashes under their favourite tree, near to us here at Ashdown Forest, Sussex.
I saw that - very moving indeed. He is indeed an inspirational guy.
I remember seeing a programme of his about an African tribe and how he was moved to tears as he described them as "some of the most important people in the world".

 He's porky and improbable as a backwoodsman but it must be said, he has a seductive narrative style and projects a very likeable persona, unlike Bear Grylls. FFS, the tosspot pseudonym says it all in the case of the latter, doesn't it?

 Les Hiddens, Ray Mears pretty similar style IMO. Bear Grylls different but I'm not offended by it, it's aimed at a different audience. Tosspot name maybe but he's got balls.

So? anyone who goes down the Zambezi on a bodyboard is entitled to use a hotel shower (or any other hotel facility) IFAIK 'Born Survivor' is about getting back to civilisation ASAP rather than living off the land. It's entertainment, don't tell me you really believed that he was solo when the footage was shot?

LOL, I though he just made it hover beside him through sheer willpower. Regardless of the 'Motel/Staged/etc allegations he's done a bit of wild stuff and raised a fair few quid for various charities in the process (assuming the Wiki page is accurate and not staged  ) so maybe he deserves to be cut a bit of slack. Go to http://www.heinnie.com/ and get a swedish Eka knife. I recommend the w11; a Mears bushcraft knife for less than £70.00I use one all the time as a forest school leader; full tang, 12c27 sandvik steel, 58 rockwell temper and good size.Sheath is a bit pants for design: the blade cuts it on draw, but hey.. a good blade.Get a fjallkniven sharpening stone too.(IMHO)Dicky

check out http://www.brisa.fi/ they do some stunning knives, then you find yourself getting into making handles, just like that Mears vid in Sweden. Well, perhaps not "just like", but a cackhanded approximation thereof. The D2 steel is supposed to be a lot like O1, which Ray Mears pretty much made the default steel for bushcraft, but tougher. Some hoary old knifemaker saddled it with a famous quote: "It takes a lousy edge, and holds it forever." They have also got the laminated Mora blades, too, or rhombus forged blades from 1900 bashed out of old railway fittings. or damascus steel at £££££2 much, unless your woodworking skills are really good, or craft forged Damascus, or stainless, knives foorm Sweden, Finland, Norway, knifemaking kits or even chefs blades from Japan... no, I need to stop now
