Trevor - I'm heading somewhere that probably has some of the sparsest and least useful public transport, and I intend taking the place apart in terms of routes. If I have ALL the information I need at my fingertips, then I can go where I like and do what I like, in the knowledge that when I step down to a road, I know exactly what level of public transport I'm going to find. That means I can aim to be on the road at exactly the right time. In other words none of it is pre-planned, but all my wanderings will take place in a setting where I can change my mind whenever I wish, and no matter what direction I choose, I'll already know what options there are for bailing out and/or moving on to the next place.

That's shattered a few illusions for me, on you stepping out adventurously to do a trail! I figured you mostly just explored on the ground as you went along day by day. Didn't realise it was all so meticulously pre-planned. I'd hate that more fully disciplined approach myself, keeping to timetables; but then I guess it all saves you time and trouble later on no doubt, of course.
