I've just been browsing Backpackinglight.com and reading a few posts about guys with a packweight of sub 3KG!!!! Has this level of extremis reached the UK lightweight community or are the plucky Brits still struggling on with over laden packs?

...or are the plucky Brits still struggling on with over laden packs? The plucky Brits are still struggling to equip themselves for British weather!

I agree with Paddy in so far as because we have such changeable weather we have to be a bit more realistic with kit.....or take a chance......

Paramo is good but I feel like a lobster with it on in anything but Winter.......

You need to try the Paramo 3rd Element jacket!
|
 |
no I dont!!! I have enough kit as it is........

You actually have to applaud the inventivness of some of the SUL guys, they're talking about getting down to a sub 1 pound (450g?) base weight given the right conditions!!!!!!

And there was old AW with a jacket and large pockets full of sarnies and apples all those years ago ;-)

My summer backpacking base-weight is usually under 3kg. I'll carry a bit more for a weekender.

 |
These guys are looking at 450g for a 150+ mile multi-day trip!!!!

In three weeks in the Sierras I saw and spoke to about 5-6 UL packers......although they were not soo light (10lbsish) as they had to carry bear cans; they were a minority though...people thought our packs were small, 90% were sporting 90 litre + behemoths

I tried a a week of ultralight back packing in the Lakes one summer, but the kit I had twenty years ago, the least weight I could manage was twenty pounds without getting stupid. Mind that is a good idea, ultralight travelling, less weight in living stuff means more capacity to carry beer. Maybe I should join the ultralight bandwagon and spend loads on featherweight gear, but it is a tadge expensive just to carry a useful amount of cheap beer.

my philosophy on (S)UL is that if I can pare down my weight in 90% of my equipment and clothing I can have a few luxuries on the other 10% ....for example I carry an exped downmat which is 900g but most of the rest of my kit is really light.... horses for courses
