Just wondering if anyone has been in the Loch Loyne area recently (past couple of weeks) and would know what the water levels are like. I have a plan to use the old road from Tomdoun to Cluanie and September is apparently when the lowest water levels occur.

Eh! That's been under water since the '60's, when the dam was built? Does it ever appear?

Here's a guy who suggests it might be a goer if you are lucky.

OK - that link appears to be dodgy - just have a look on maps.live.com

Very interesting. I doubt it will be a goer after this wet summer.

Disnae seem to matter - they have to run the reservoir down

If you spot it, post it on here. I would love to walk a 'drowned' road.

Didn't Nick Crane film it on his Great British Journeys tv program some months ago?

Yes, but he had to stop when he got to the Loch. A Liberal tosser politician rowed him across.

I wonder if said politician is doing anything in a week or so??

I came across this post on another site. I plan to cycle this road in ten days time. So if any one else is up that way an update would be useful. http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=318310 The thread includes a note from donald m (from Inverness) who cycled the road on Sun 31st Aug

Whee! Good news. I'm planning to do it next week some time, so I'll take some photos.

I don't think it was a wet summer in North-west Scotland, certainly no wetter than usual and there have been long dry spells there. It's the rest of us who have had to put up with the incessant rain.

Did it!! Just back from a two-day cycle tour from Invergarry, Tomdoun, past Cluanie, into Affric, Tomich, Cougie, Ceannacroc and back to Invergarry. The photos show the state of the two bridges. The higher one has already half collapsed and it's possible to see down through it in places. I can't imagine it'll last much longer. The track from Tomdoun to Cluanie is still holding up well. A touring bike would cope with it fine. Some photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/druidh2000/sets/72157607210625132/

Brilliant! What state is the submerged road in? I can't get your link to work for some reason.
|

Very ineteresting Druidh and well done. When Loch Cluanie is low the old road to Skye is obvious in places. By the way I couldn't get the link to work.

Cool If you copy paste the link into your search bar it works OK Linsdsay

|
