No brainer really, what else are wellies for if not for walking in? Please, no answers mentioning four legged mammals...unless written on a fifty pound note and sent to my home address, of course.

Seriously though, a good well fitting pair of wellies will do as well as anything else for just walking. I knew a shepherd in my childhood who walked tens of miles most days and he wore no other footwear. German field boots weren't much different in WWII, other than being made of leather.

As several have mentioned, I'd recommend Wellies only if it's REALLY muddy. For  mere rain I use GTX hiking boots and gaiters wtih GTX rain pants over the gaiters.

But in Alaska they have boots known as "Alaskan tennis shoes". Elswhere in the world they are known as hipboots for fishing. Lots of folks up there put many miles on them when hunting, fishing  or just plain working.

I wear wellies across the moor when peal fishing at night - they do a grand job really. However, one draw back is the way they articulate; I have sensitive achilles and the fold digs in

You can get wellies that have, as part of their design, support and protection for the achilles tendon. Expensive, though.

I know what a sewin is, you old trout. I'd just wondered what you were referring to as being called sewin fishing since you'd made no introductory reference. Call yourself English? You didn't even spot my mistake.

Would you like a few pointers in the correct usage of your own language?

I settled for a pair of the Esk Muck Boots and have been impressed so far. They're very comfortable on walks of five or six miles along the River Eden, with plenty of support under foot and no folds digging in with every step I take. They're pretty warm, so good for winter, but don't seem excessively sweaty. Grip also seems good, even on muddy ground.

I've replaced the supplied footbeds with some of my old orthotics and there's still plenty of room in them -- in fact, they might be a bit too roomy for people with low volume feet.

I spend quite a few winters in dunlop work wellies, as well as chainsaw wellies and boots, put in some nice insoles and decent socks and I was plenty comfortable. Did develop athletes foot mind...

My feet are only low volume when they're humming, at other times they can be quite noisome.
