Not really for the minimalists. It comes in 3 versions, and the Medium in the lightest version weighs 1.2kg. It is non-breathable too, so you will sweat buckets if walking in it. You can get a 150g breathable waterproof, 200g tarp and a 50g sheet of polycro for a total of around 400g.

Ingenious, but I'm not sure that it would be lighter, cheaper or easier than carrying a lightweight bivvy bag. The only difference is that it is effectively a waterproof "pied d'elephant", using the jacket to form the upper half of a bivvy bag, so potentially saving half the weight. Taking that concept and running with it, you could make the simple lower half, and not have it integrated into the jacket; most people will surely be carrying a pack of some sort where this could be stored. I'm always dubious about how it would work with any sort of pack.

I think this story has been released two weeks too early!

emergency shelter? Hmmmm. I think I'll stick with my blizzard bag for now. That & my jacket combined weigh a lot less than a Jakpak.
