I need a lightweight set of trews as part of my kit list for a summer event. I know of the Montane pants - any other suggestions as I have a set of £100 Sprayway somethingorothers but they're neither small when rolled up nor light? Suggestions?

I don't know whether I'm particularly hard on trousers or I got a really shit pair, but my Berghaus Paclites have come back from every trip they've been on with various new rips and tears. They're light and comfortable but they rarely fulfilled their actual function because of all the mini-tears and the last time I wore them they were probably more gaffer tape than goretex paclite due to repairs.

 I've got some OMM Kamleika Race 'pants' which do the job reasonably well. Should fit your budget.

Just wandering about in the Lakes/North Wales/Scotland. No climbing, maybe the tiniest bit of scrambling but probably not when I've been wearing them.

 If you're after minimal weight there are some very light Montane ones due out this spring. The minimus trousers - 125g or so is what seems to have been quoted in the publicity. I'd imagine they'd come in within the budget. Short side zips so maybe better for trainers I guess. (but thats where a lot of the weight loss is coming from!) If weight not critical you might well hit a sale on something well under budget (some RAB off limit trousers about at ~50 say.). Berghaus paclite trousers fine right up to the point where they meet anything vaguely sharp (I've had one pair wiped out by barbed wire, and another by slipping a little bit down some scree.).

  I don't imagine that's a failing of Berghaus paclites specifically.... mine have survived about 8 years (and yes, they do get used!)

 Don't know what you call them, (not Paclites), my Berghaus ones in Aquafoil, are light, fit in a 1lt stuff sack and have stood up to everything I've thrown at them, without a rip, problem. Cost about £60.

 Have you looked at ME particle pants? They pack pretty small and are lightweight (288g). A quick google search found them on sale in The Climbers Shop for £59. Wouldn't swear to them be very robust though, but that's the sacrifice for lightweight.

 My Berghaus Paclites have stood up pretty well to 5 years of use and abuse. I'd buy them again, which I guess is a recommendation.

I guess it just tough. Yes they're well designed etc, but also relatively expensive and definetly fragile. The cost differential has definetly dropped a little recently mind. (iirc it was something like 50 vs 100 for atomics vs them at one point? 80 vs 100 now.). Still the ~200g/100 pounds bracket is rather crowded with alternatives now, most of which do something better: ME/Haglofs seem to have active shell things in the same sort of area. Or the stretchy Kamleika's. Or the new Montane Atomics at 20 pounds less RRP and a tougher material. Or the minimi at the same cost but ~75g lighter. (probably as fragile!). (they've switched the atomics to the 'heavy' version of pertex shield which is def tougher than the berg paclites.). Suppose their one distinctive feature is 3/4's+ length side zips. Some might like them, I think its a bit of misfeature myself

 Montane atomics. Great waterproof over trousers, lightweight & breathable. My first Montane purchase a few years ago and the slippery slope of Montane gear enthusing ever since!
