I am undertaking my ML Summer assesment in April next year and need to replace the 'borrowed' rope that I am using at the moment. The problem is that I am receiving conflicting advice on the strength, length and diametre that would be most appropriate for the ML. I believe that 30 - 50m would be the correct length but it also needs to be light and easy to carry. Any advice on this would be appreciated.
Paul

I don't remember my rope costing anything near that price. I just went down to a hill walking/climbing shop and they cut the length I needed.

If you are in doubt as to the dimensions required contact whoever is going to do your assessment or try the National Training Centres like Glenmore Lodge.

Eric Langmuir's "Mountaincraft & Leadship" - pretty much the bible for ML - reckons 30M of 9mm rope is sufficient for most (hillwalking) purposes.

Colin I think 30M was what I got but I suspect I got off with 8mm.

There was no adverse comments when I used it at Glenmore Lodge.

They used to sell it in a 'bin' near the back door at Outdoor in Hathersage. "Walker's Confidence Rope" they labelled it.

I've seen them labeled as 'scrambling ropes', normally 30m lengths aswell.

If there's a Decathlon near you they sell this Beal rope for £27.95 which may suit.
