My Lowe Mountain Cap drives me nuts. Physical exertion greater than chewing a piece of flapjack causes me to overheat in it. It gets wet inside, itches and causes sweat rash on my otherwise pristine and highly polished bonce. Can someone please suggest a cooler-running, comfortable alternative that retains the best attributes of the LMC - ie, ear protection and wind/waterproof outer shell. Ta.

Paramo make a cap along similar design lines to the Lowe one but it's not as warm, otherwise Extremities make several Goretex caps, some mesh lined, some with fleece, that might fit the bill. I suspect Outdoor Designs do too.

They're not waterproof but as a slaphead myself I find Buffs do an excellent job. If it's raining enough to wet it I'll have my hood up anyway.

Stick a Powerstretch balaclava under the mountain cap when it's cold--that's what I do. My mates call me the Hillwalking Ninja. :D

In milder conditions, I don't usually bother with a hat: my unruly thatch of hair does the job just as well.

In really cold weather I wear a genuine rabbit fur Russian Ushanka.

It is the warmest and most comfortable thing I have ever worn and I don't get trouble with overheating either, I just loosen the ears flaps or put them back over the top.

Only down side is that the ear flaps make the most effective sound insulation I have ever worn too.

Beware though, there are a lot of cheap simulated fur and inferior copies around for sale in this country.

I got mine from a Russian Officer on a convoy run to Belarus and the Ukraine a few years ago!

Bought one of these out of curiosity, really, then found it to be excellent. Warm when wet, quick-drying, wringable etc..
£2.99 well-spent.

I use my old faithfull lowe alpine lite flite cap the same build as the mountain cap but a dryflo liner , years old this got it from the Barndoor shop many moons back, Other wise my stubble head finds that a Buff works just fine.

I wear a wool cloth baseball cap and a thermal fleece headband. I take the hat off when my scalp starts to itch.

I use a Buff quite often. My Lowe Alpine Mountain Cap is just too hot most of the time. Reading through the replies, Paramo, OD and Exremities look promising. Thanks.
