Im going on a big circle of a trip around mainland europe stopping in france, germany, italy austria etc. in end of july, early august. We're (a group of about 24!!) staying in phreaks, 2 per each one, and i was wondering what kind of bag to take (currently have a snugpak travelpak extreme), or not at all and go for just a liner?
anyone travelled in similar conditions to this?

I'd recommend a light sleeping bag - especially if you're likely to be at altitude.

THe best down bags (and great value) are PHD bags:

If your using it just in warmer conditions the Vango down bags are very cheap for what they are and they pack down real small, there not much use in winter or colder conditions but there a bargain for warmer conditions.

Have a look at the Snugpak Merlin. Very light and tiny pack size. It's fine for summer use but you'd need to add a liner if you sleep cold.

What kind of temperatures can i be expecting at that time of year? im looking at the vango venom's, but not sure which one would suit me most. the merlin looks good, but i have a discounted price list for the vango gear, so id be better off going vango!

Conditions in central and southern Europe in July/August are generally hot at low level. Be prepared for 30C during the day and 20C at night, although a lot of the time it might be cooler. How high are you going?

 |
not really that sure, but im guessing we're going to be quite high in Innsbruck and the Black Forest in Germany

I had aVango Venom which was good, but very close fitting with an average zip. I know the point of a mummy bag is to be snug, but it was just too hot for me in the UK, so for summer I changed over to a ME Ultralite, which I can open out and use more like a duvet with an Aldi silk liner.

i have a vango voyager 50...its very light and very small when packed. its wide fitting and with the addition of a t-shirt it can be good at alltitude. No very expensive either about £35.

I was thinking of the venom 150, but the doc's advice says otherwise. if i had the money id probably go for the PHD piqolo (with a zip) which is tinysmall, but costs £141 more than i would like it to! on the subject of liners, are there any that stand above the rest in performance, comfort etc.

I understand that Alpkit are looking to make a summer down bag. Rather intersted in that myself....
