I use Mountain Equipment Drilite Plus Pants with full length zips. You can unzip them and separate the legs so you don't have to take your muddy boots off or force them down the trouser legs. You can also unzip them to vent them in between showers, which is good as i often get hot when i'm waring them.

Your trousers do get slightly damp if you have been waring them for a couple of hours in the rain, but not to much that they don't dry out after half an hour or so with them off. Mine cost £55 when i brought them.

Apologies to anyone I might have upset with my posts. I should have stuck to advice and not given opinions. Pete mate (Morley 4), there's always one awkward bugger isn't there? (only kidding). It's your system and it works for you, good luck with it. Let's not lose track of why we buy gear, it's to get out and enjoy the outdoors. When I started hillwalking I had wool jumpers and completely non breathable waterproofs, I still went and it was still fantastic.

Well said Steve. And I hope you didn't take my little "intervention" personally, it certainly wasn't meant so. It was only that other threads have degenerated into stupid "mine works, yours doesn't, does, doesn't, does, doesn't, liar" affairs - which can be entertaining to a point but not much help to the original poster. In the end (and fortunately) we are all different and different things work for us. And compared to yesteryear there is relatively little downright bad kit about - I started with a bright orange, knee length, silicone-proofed nylon cagoule and my aspiration was to afford a 100% neoprene proofed one. Lovely!

No offence taken Matt. Ah! the good old days, my first jacket was that long I didn't need overtrousers, now there's a thought.
