Hi,

Just reading this thread 'cos Im looking into getting a solar panel and noticed sum1 was asking about windup phone chargers - millets currently have little ones for a tenner but they dont have all types of phone charger connections in them.

I've ordered one of the 12w Sunlinq Solar Chargers (thats 'www.selectsolar.co.uk/pics/sunlinq.php'), coming from the US and unfortunately, doesn't look like it's going to arrive before I head to the hills tomorrow.
I specifically want it to charge a Nikon DSLR battery. When I've had a chance to try it out I'll let you know how it performs.

Not sure how it performs yet, still to try it out in the wild, but have a look at Solio hybrid charger. perfect for the british summer as it contains it's own rechargebale batteries which can be pre-charged from the main, and topped up in the field, or can be charged from flat in the sun. By putting a pencil through the hinge in the middle it can also be stood up and directed at the sun for efficiency. it's quiet pricey, but from a full charge it will apparently fully charge a mobile phone 4-5 times from flat.

For those looking at car chargers for Canon's (and I assume Nikons too for those not loucky enough to have a decent camera ;-) ) then Jessops do an own brand car charger for £20ish. Works a treat. PITA to find on their awful website, but they have them in stock.

I am planning to use Solar panel(s) to power the light for my outdoor garden.  What is needed.  I would like to go with LED, and 20-25 watt halogen light.

What and where can I purchase the appropriate panel?

It's not exactly portable, is it now? Some people haven't got the brains they were born with!

I have a FreeLoader solar recharger, £22 on e-bay, comes with 12 different adaptors, can charge i-pods, PS3's, etc. so might find it could charge your camera.
Could try phoneing Solar Technology Help Line, +44 (0) 1684 774000, or www.solartechnolgy.co.uk . HTMH.

Husky, what's that Freeloader like?  Some people have said it's not the best, what's your view?

Works OK for me, but I only use for charging mobile, nice and small though and does charge in not ideal conditions, just takes longer!!

Dosen't like rain, not waterproof! But will still charge behind glass, etc. Again takes longer.

IMHO if you want a flexible solar cahrger you buy one which has a 12V output, This way you always can connect a car charger for your electrical stuff. Other way around is use only equipment with AA or AAA type batteries and buy a solar panle which is able to charge those. DSLR's have grips which can taken AA's and they have chargers as well for their propriety batteries. So both option are vialable for DSLr's. The only thing is that working with an extra batterygrip means more weight. I think a car charger adds less weight to your kit...

But then you're not able to charge AAA's for your headtorch or GPS. You'll need a separate car charger for AA and aaa type batteries... It's always something.
