As mainly of us go away for a holiday each year or even a longer period we of course take out travel insurance. As there are backpackers, trekkers, mountaineers etc on this site, how many of you have found it hard to find travel insurance for more then a year? I’ve so far found one company you can go up to 24 months but will not renew or extend it. I’m planning to do a worldwide trip for 5 years (not climbing up any mountains) but only 2 years will be covered.
I would like to know who else is in this boat that is having the same trouble as I am or is there any way around this problem?

I've not heard of any. I think the problem is that insurers are not prepared to offer a policy that covers 5 years as when you sign the dotted line it locks them into a contract and the world may change in 5 years. Add to that rising costs of equipment, health care and they could end up losing serious amounts of cash.

Yea but why can't they let people renew it like when you renew your motor insurance.
|
 |
No i don't see why not either. My annual policy is renewed. Unless it's incase you are costing them too much with a claim every other month.

The only 24 month company I've found are STA travel.co.uk and I ask for the simples things and still said 'no' will not extend or renew it, duff or what.

The problem on renewal is that most policies have to originate in the UK, you can't take them out once you've started travelling. This strikes me as sensible - without it, people would wait till they needed insurance them before taking it out!
Most long term policies I looked at when we were travelling also expired on any return to the UK (even if it was just 2 days partway through). In 5 yrs a lot can happen that might mean you need to come home for a short trip.

Well it was a long time ago but i managed to get Endsleigh insurance to renew while i was out in Africa but it was only from 6 months to 10 months, they also sent the documents to me "poste restante" in Lusaka.

My insurance is through the BMC. In practice it is easy to renew each year.

 |
I have BMC annual insurance and they always remind me to renew from year to year, so it's seamless coverage from the expiration of one policy to the start of the next. Is that what you're looking for? You'd need their 'extended' policy as you'll be away for longer than 93 days at a stretch, and I assume they'd be happy for you to renew while you're on the move, but if you want to chat to the guy who can tell you exactly what the deal is, then phone BMC on 0870-0104878 or email insure@thebmc.co.uk

Cheers for that, I'll see what BMC can do for me.

hi all, i never hear about this type of travel insurance which covers 5 years duration. but many companies, you may found that can extend your backpacker insurance for 5 years. but they impose many terms and conditions on you. so, you would be carefull at time of policy. i had also a Backpacker insurance for my long duration trips.......it would be better option to search Backpacker insurance with long stay.......

World Nomads will cover you if you are already overseas, but they're far from the cheapest. Get the best deal you can for as long as you can and then deal with it when it expires. I dare say you'll want to pop back at some point in the next 5 years (i was itching to after 18 months, and left weeks later with 1000% more energy for the rest of the trip). On that note, should you pop back to the UK, that would (in most cases) invalidate the rest of your policy. Have fun

I don't know about the long term insurance policy..I think you consult some insurance company...

Direct Travel have been really good in the last few hours. Mountain rescue, heli ride, private hospital treatement (in Kathmandu) with minimal fuss and BS. Well worth the 10 quid a month... They're one of the few to have unlimited trekking altitiude and rafting grade (especially at that price!). Not sure if they go over 12mo though.
