 ahhhhhhhhhh...got it :)
bought some terrocs yesterday and they are heaven to wear. am looking forward to clocking up a few miles over the summer. I was sort of hoping they might not be too bad for a bit of scrambling as well as I hate carrying extra shoes, but if necessary can get soem lightweight stiffer soled shoes.
Snow + Rock have a pair of Terrocs size 5H for £45 on their website. Go girlz!
thanx for the clarification, was a bit sleepy earlier

PW - I'm still going for a haricut!
I have also joined the new pair of Terrocs club - old pair relegated to gardening duty only.
One thought about Terrocs wet feet and Sealskinz.
Sealskinz are good for short periods, river wades or walking through snow. But for walking all day in rain or through boggy ground then its better to stick with wool socks and carry a couple os spare pairs.
Sealskinz need a humidity gradient to 'breath', but if you wear them all day in wet conditions they don't and you get wet (and in my case cold) feet anyway. The Sealskinz are then difficult to dry and smell like the Devil's bottom when they do.

It's a bit of a dilemma with the Sealskinz, David. I certainly know what you mean about the drying problem - I find that they take more than a day to dry here in the kitchen, and out in the hills I just can't do it at all.
Still, I'll need to find a way to make the Flyrocs more comfy for me in wet conditions. I'm going to try the X-Socks, and see whether they help.

Peewiglet .. a few ideas .. goretex socks dry out much quicker than sealskinz, and mean you can wear the (dry) socks of choice .. Running Bear "Bearfoot" socks are really good, and cheap - 3 pairs for less than £10. Make sure socks are completely inside your Goretex socks otherwise they will wick rain into them. And I've just seen these wee running gaiters, tho' I haven't used them. And x-socks do some water repellant socks that look interesting also.

Many thanks for those suggestions and links, ALoveSupreme! I'll check them out :)

oh and by the way, before you run out and spend lots of money .. it says in this months TGO "TGO has seen Inov-8's top secret prototype, which is less of a shoe and more like a waterproof, ultra-light footwear system".

I rang them when I got back from the Challenge, and they told me they've got some exciting new stuff coming out towards the end of the year, including a shoe that incorporates a little gaiter! I'm looking forward to seeing one :)

I find the SealSkinz dry out quite quickly if turned inside out and hung up. A couple of years ago I did a 10 day walk mostly in rain and wet snow and wore SealSkinz inside trail shoes. By the end of each day the SealSkinz were damp inside but my feet still warm until I stopped walking. Once in the tent I changed to dry Smartwool socks and stuffed the SealSkinz, inside out, inside my clothes. When I went to sleep I hung them up in the tent. In the morning I brought them into the sleeping bag to warm them up before putting them on. They were just about dry when I did put them on.
With regard to the Challenge it was exceptionally cold this year. I was out a few times and still using winter gear, which is very unusual for me in May. On the Challenge two years I found the SealSkinz too hot and preferred to let my feet get wet - they were still warm in Smartwool socks. This year I guess the SealSkinz would not have been too warm.
My experience of Gore-Tex socks is that they aren't as comfortable or durable as SealSkinz but there are undoubtedly some brands I haven't tried.

I have both Goretex socks and Sealskinz; I find the Goretex socks much more useful, and more breathable. They let you use socks of choice underneath, appropriate to the season, and you only need to put them on when it is persistently wet. Had mine for a decade or more; still going fine including being used for fell-running in snow. Last used them a couple of weekends ago when I was camping and walking high in a very wet Knoydart - kept my feet bone dry and warm.

Don't suppose you have a brand name for those Goretex socks do you?

Berghaus .. but others now make them including Trekmates I think.

 Cool, thanks! :)

After a couple of weeks of very late nights, the first part of the TEN part podcast series is in the process of being uploaded as I type this.
This is an audio diary of the 2006 TGO crossing Rose and I did this year and sets the scene, discusses gear and the adventures of the first couple of days.
Interviews with others start in part two.
You'll need iTunes to find it, as I'm too tired to add it to the website right now!
Something to pass half an hour in the office tomorrow! Enjoy ;-)
