I am hoping to do some coastal walking on various islands and bits of islands eg Harris (to start with).

I accept that responsible wild camping in Scotland is ok but I assume that camping near eg nesting birds is not 'responsible?'

any thoughts on this anyone?

Rowan,
According to the Land Reform (Scotland) Act you are allowed to wild camp for up to two or three nights in the one place provided you are genuinely passing through for recreation. You must also be out of sight of any road or building. You can't camp in enclosed fields etc. I think common sense applies re nesting birds ie find a pitch where you are unlikely to disturb the birds.

thanks CMcN - I sort of knew about the birds but I had a lovely email back from a lady involved with tourism on one of the smaller isles (I think it was Rum - it was ages ago) who asked that she would prefer it if I didnt wild camp at all due to wild bird nesting etc and would I use one of the two camp sites on the island...But I guess whilst its down to common sense where to pitch and where not to, I really aim to be a responsible wild camper and will certainly take her advice

cheers

Interesting regarding Rum. I was planning a trip there last year and phoned the reserve office and was told I could camp where I liked. In the event I didn't go to Rum but Tiree instead. We ended up camping on one of the beaches there on the west side of the island, it may not be the hilliest of isles (!) but it certainly is one of the most idyllic and would recommend it highly

Hi Rowan,
You picked a peculiar case with Rum. The island is a National Nature Reserve run by Scottish Natural Heritage so I guess the folk there are more concerned than normal about nesting birds. having said that, I'm sure there are many areas on Rum where you could wild camp without disturbing the wildlife.

If you are planning to camp on the western (machair) side of the Outer Hebrides you do need to be aware that these are internationally important breeding areas, so take care since some parts, eg around Howmore, have very dense ground nesting patterns. You may have read how efforts are underway to rid the Uists of hedgehogs since they are causing great damage to waders and other breeding birds. But do listen out for the corncrakes, they will keep you up all night!
