Thank you for putting that together Matt & PW - I really enjoyed reading it.
I am only a bit annoyed that my mum didn't tell me it was on as she lives at the bottom of Beacon Fell!
Many boy scouts at Waddecar?

Hi Marcus, Thanks, always nice to know someone's read it! ;-) Hopefully you can tell that we really enjoyed it, and I certainly hope it becomes a successful annual event. They've got plenty of ideas for varying the course to take in different parts of Bowland.
And yes, Waddecar had quite a few scout groups in residence, although most of them were scattered around the far reaches of the site, and the group on the main camping field weren't at all bad really - a bit of noise but hey, that's kids. We only saw one group being marshalled around the flagpole on Sunday morning, dutifully making the right noises in the right places during their end-of-trip pep talk!

All the credit is Matt's, Marcus - I had no crubeen in it.
It was a great, great day - what an astoundingly beautiful place! I actually like it better than the Lakes :)
Matt, definitely a good read... made me want to be there taking part, and if that was one of your reasons for writing it you succeeded admirably.
Anyway, it sounds like a truly memorable day! Thanks for sharing it.
Thanks Andrew, glad you liked it - but I don't think I'll give up the day job! ;-)
And yes, I only really wrote it to try to encourage a bit more support for the efforts of the team at Bowland MRT - I wanted to get across to people, just like me, who've never thought of doing anything like this before, what good fun it was so that they might think of trying it another time. Originally I was only going to post a few lines on the forum thread as a report - to bump it back up for a day or two - but as I started to post the words just sort of flowed... :)

If anyone likes cheese and the outdoors (or even cheese in the outdoors) Bowland is THE place to go. Authentic Lancashire cheese can only be made in the area.
If you like pub food the area must have some of the best in Britain and all at good prices too. Try the Derby Arms (Chippping Road, Longridge). Book though.
The Green Man at Whitechapel is where we usually hang out with my mum and you can get the best lamb shoulder anywhere. Also the best Goosenargh Duck outside of Goosenargh.

They all sound like good places to explore Marcus - cheers.
I've only walked in Bowland 2 or 3 times so far (including this weekend) but I'll definitely be doing more. I've actually cycled it a bit more. I love the mountain bike route from Slaidburn over Salter Fell and back by Cross o' Greet (plus the cafes in Slaidburn and Wray!). And 3 years ago, I think, I cycle-camped the northern loop of the Lancashire Cycleway which was fantastic. It was May Bank holiday so the Scarecrow Festivals were in full swing - Wray's was superb and Waddington's not bad either. And the whole circuit was cafe-heaven - Wray, Slaidburn, Waddington, Longridge, Inglewhite, and others I forget now.
For a Yorkshireman-in-exile I have to admit to liking the west of the Pennines!! :)

 best lamb shoulder
Um...
<fx: smiles nervously, and takes a couple of steps backwards...>
Marcus - know anywhere good for pork chops!?
;-)
Directly under a hot grill works for me!
 LOL :)

<fx: trots away tearfully, wiping snout on crubeen>

It sounds like it was great fun, and Matt, your article is very readable and really well written - Jon will have to watch out!
Cheers Kate. And no, I think Jon's safe - actually it was him who put the sub-headings in, and changed the odd word here and there - it definitely turned out better for his gentle input.
You must be off to Ireland very soon now - have a great time...

"For a Yorkshireman-in-exile I have to admit to liking the west of the Pennines!!" Careful there Matt...don't get too carried away! Mind you, who am I to talk...a Yorkshireman-in-exile in Ayrshire ;-)
Aye, but then we both escaped from the flat bit of Yorkshire so maybe it's excusable to like it over this side...?
(...says he from the middle of the Cheshire plain!! But the hills are easier to get to from here :)
Sounds like a good defence to me! Didn't realise you were also from the flat bit of Yorkshire!
York - doesn't get much flatter...
...except over towards Hull! ;-)
Noooo, please stop reminding me that York is flat! Im moving "up north" to get away from the flatness of East Anglia, at least pretend there are some hills near York :-(
Nice one guys. I considered doing this, but, with one thing and another, I never got around to getting sorted.
It is a beautiful area. I live in the northern end of Bowland (Quernmore area by Clougha Pike). In a way, that's a bad thing, cos I get so used to the area that I never really take the time to go walking 'properly' in Bowland. Every now and then I pop up Clougha Pike though. IMO it has the best views in Britain.
