No surprise that they're not making a movie of Touching Void and the 'cutting the rope'. I guess the problem is that they'd be too few characters for a film, basically just Joe & Simon Yates.
The book's great, a real epic, if you haven't read it yet, you must.
Best of luck to Joe on his north face of the Eiger climb.
I was in Grindleward just over a week ago, the Eiger towers over the village. Was there for two days, rain & cloud both days and could barely see the first 2000m of it, except for the occassional glimpse of the higher parts through gaps in the cloud.
However woke up on my last day, to bright sunshine and super views of the Eiger, it really is stunning. There looked to have been plenty of recent snowfall.
It's incredible that people manage to climb the north face, and unbelievable to read that someone's actually solo-ed it.
The weather going to be the key to Joe's attempt, a settled forecast is imperative. Reading his last book though its obvious he understands the dangers.

Nice bloke too. Heard him on a 'tour', I asked him if he had the 'balls' to play golf.

I think the main reason they don't think touching the void will make it as a film is that Joe Simpson won't let them f### about with the story, the producers wanted to alter it so that "they were in radio contact throughout" so apparently they were told to go forth and multiply!, fair play to 'im!, it'll probably get made one day as a "based on a true story" peice of holywood shite like a lot of others.

Thing is...how many people will say...cutting the rope...they stole that idea from Vertical Limit!

 |
 sadly too true Alex

 oh god don't...
on the subject of films, i seem to remember hearing somewhere that following 'Clifhanger' they (hollywood) were sued by whoever made the harness shown snapping in the opening scene as sales of that harness had gone down since the making of the film. Don't know how much if any truths is in that story tho.
whats wrong with american gangland shoot em up films anyway, cant they leave the outdoors out of bollywood, hence stop painting entirely the wrong image of the outdoors!
Best of luck to joe tho!

The harness was a BD Bod, I think, and the carabiner, a screwgate, levered open. Always a bit worrying. Not sure if anyone got sued. I liked the bolt gun that Sly had, worked wicked for placing pro miles above your head, I'll have one any time.
|
 |
Oh thanks we're just off to the Dolimites with our bods. See you then or possibly not.
|
 |
Don't forget the screwdriver to partially lever open the krabs - add a little 'frisson' to the proceedings? And let 'Emergency 999' know where you are so they can bring their cameras.
But if you get one of those bolt guns you can bolt your way out of anything...
..except all the trad climbers who'll give you a rollocking for using it, of course....
'Breaking News' Climber in Dolomites gets bolted to rock in several delicate places by his own instrument. When interviewed, Michael Drysdale, 25 (sic) said, 'It was me or the rock. I got the rock by the short and curlies. Trouble was, some climbers from Leicestershire University saw me and did the same to me'. Mr Drysdale is now nursing his injured pride (and joy) in hospital. The extensive bruising and swelling is expected to go down sufficiently for him to fit through the aircraft door in a couple of days.

 lol
Though I wouldn't want to be 25 again, living through my life once is enough thank you.

About that Cliffhanger harness, I think there was bit in the credits saying that it had been specially modified for the film and that it wouldn't normally do that! I guess that got them out of being sued.
|
 |
Yeah, it was supplied by BD and like Sophie syas, there was a bit of blurb towards the end of the credits saying as how it had been altered for the purposes of the film, normally very safe etc etc.
Going back slightly, I think a dramatisation of TTV would be superb.

Joe and Simon did film a re-enactment of the rope cut for an American TV programme at some point. Anyone see it?
There are other characters whose roles could be built up for the sake of dramatisation, Richard at base camp for example or the bunch of Peruvians; Spinosa and the girls.
Though quite how the film-makers could get in their usual obligatory romance/sex scene into TTV is beyond me.
Buy hey, since when did docu-dramas ever stay true to life?
And Tom Cruise? No thanks. Little oik. He looks like someone hit him on the bridge of the nose with a half-brick.
And left it there.
Just thought of the romance angle. They could start with Joe wishing Jacky a tearful farewell at the airport. Then as he is in the crevasse, he could be talking to her; she back home in England could be talking to him, smelling the pillow where his head used to lie, missing him. Cut to gratuitous sex scene of J and J having a sweaty bonk just before he flew out....sorted!!
Though I kinda have an idea what his reaction would be if anyone suggested that scene to him...

Nay, Joe and Simon are gay lovers, Joe ditches Simon for Richard, Simon pushes Joe over edge and cuts rope, Simon returns to base camp, ice axe's Richard (where have we heard that before). Joe survives and returns for revenge..........
|
 |
 ...and the donkeys?
|
 |
Ah yes, what to do about the sex interest?

Michael! Wash out your snout with Persil!
You'll be saying next that the Peruvian girls put on a bit of a 'show' for Richard while J and S are up a creek.
