 Thanks Bob :)
This has been a great series of podcasts.
Thought the interviews on the fly were good and the end of challenge interviews were interesting :)
I like your observations at the start/end of each day and give a more spur of the moment reaction, more than an analysed version.
Not sure how you`re going to top this but I`m waiting with baited breathe :)

Bob, fantastic series, if this doesn't get you OM Outdoors personality of the year, nothing will.

........Well the footies on, so time to do something useful!
Bob - Podcast Feedback: Full marks on the effort that has gone into it - we all appreciate the time and trouble you've taken on the recording and editing.
So here's some comments (intended objectively)
I thought a 5 hr diary was a bit overlong, and I found myself starting to skip bits in parts 6-9, usually around the 'where have you come from, are you enjoying it' time.
And there's only so many times you can explain how wonderful/wet the view/weather is on a 2 week walk.
The gear elements, especially best/worst (Pt10), and the breakdown of Bob/Rose kit (Pt1) and then review a few days later (Pt3?) was good.
As a taster for the TGO I'd got the sense of it by the end of Pt 3/4, and in hindsight could have probably skipped to Pt 9; With respect, as interesting as individual stories were during the Challenge, if you were'nt there, do you care?
As an intro to backpacking it's quite a warts 'n all view (which is good) I think the US lady (Pt 10) had it about right when asked to explain it to her countrymen - it's a mental state of mind, and not something to wander across in sneakers. From that point of view the Podcast was tremendously successful in getting that part of the whole backpacking experience across.
As an intertaining and informative piece it worked. Main criticism - the 5 hour cast could be stripped into 2 or 3 shorter casts, with a sharper focus for each (oven ready commission for Radio 4 audio diary, Bob?)
Is this type of program more enjoyable? Hmmmm now there's a question. IMHO as a change yes. As such a long piece, no, a bit too much for me.
Be interesting to see what other podcast ideas you've come up with, having had the TGO walk/edit thinking time.
Trust the above isn't too critical. I really did enjoy the cast, and you are one of the few pod subscriptions that have not outstayed their welcome on this pc!
Thanks again Bob.
(phew that was long one!)

Yeah, a bit long, John. Perhaps could be edited down to a few lines? ;-)))))

Thanks for that feedback one and all and taking footy time to write the long one Jon.
I did wonder if it would be too long an epic and as you rightly say, will anyone who didn't do it be interested?
Although we maybe more experienced, OM is full of people starting out, wanting hints and tips to help them get outdoors, and someimes may never have the time to indulge themseleves in a 2 week trek, for many reasons.
There's nothing out there for people like this of a similar nature. Too short and it doesn't provide enough information - too long and it bores others. Can't please all the people all the time, as they say.
However, (a) at least the detailed information is now there, (b) people can choose to download it, and more importantly (c) as you did, people can skip, replay or just listen to what takes their fancy, from each program.
Such is the beauty if podcasting. I could have made the Q&A a bit deeper with each interview, but sadly people don't tend to chat openly like that as they walk. Maybe in the evenings around a bothy fire, but as we didn't see many of those all I could do is paint pictures and use sound to tickle the imagination.
I agree with you a mix of styles keeps the podcast in your browser and that is what I aim to do. Some one to one, and some out doing stuff. Hopefully my next plans will excite the audience even more and we can have even more variety available for anyone.

yup; me.

working term-time; there has been a suggesting of a long distance OM walk, but its something I'd need to work up to.
Maybe I'm the only 'novice' that found your hard work and the fact the emotional drive involved in the walking too. Comments like finding Braemar marking the 'almost done' point.
|
 |
Certainly true about Braemar - it marks the end of the trek - although you'd never think so by looking at maps.

Well, Managed to get through all ten TGOC podcasts. Its been a bit of a challenge in itself and apart from a bit of blistering around the ears, I made it through. Glad to report my lightweight MP3 player performed admirably despite carrying such a load.
Enjoyed the interview with ruby wax in part 10 (:-))almost as much as listening to Bob slurring and erring after some liquid refreshment. Perhaps we should rename you vod-bob !
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this series. It was very ambitious but it worked superbly and provided a great resource for future would-be challengers. I shall endeavour to save up and buy something from your site in recognition. Well done !

Sorry about your ears bleeding ecco! Your comments are reward enough, thanks.
Just got to come up with something to top that as Bad Wolf suggests.
Hmmmm....

I think I will find these helpful if I decide to attempt a challenge.
Its given me a good idea of what equipment I may need, bivvy bag, bothy bag, down jacket.
V***o podcasts :)
All joking aside, Im not sure how well a V***o podcast would work, if it was some new piece of equipment or showing how to pitch a laser correctly :) or 2 weeks across Scotland :) maybe but for interviews the audio works fine plus I don't want to have to but a v***o I**d. :D

 "V***o podcasts"
But sometimes the pictures are better on the radio.... ;-)
<PS. Finished Part 7 Bob - I'm getting there - all good stuff so far :) >

Video podcasts could work very well in certain situations. I can see these becoming increasingly important. Check out the Lonely Planet podcasts and imagine films !!!

Or on a 'simpler' note: http://www.earlyamerica.com/shot_heard.htmwhich takes the Ric & Ken Burns "The Civil War" idea to add still pictures to life. A 'simpler' version could be done with free software like Windows Movie Maker (just sign over your soul at the usual place).
