Can't blame you Barry, my favourite mountain too!!
Well, its ok, but better than the Lakes and Scotland? ;-))
Bob, I side with Barry and Tony on this. I love the BB and Pen y fan.
I think you need another visit to decide (let me know and I'll try and get down there as well)
I love em all from Hatterall Hill to Black Mountain.
dont get me wrong as i love the brecon beacons and have not been all over but to say they are better than snowdonia and the lakes is quite a statment.never been to scotland so cant comment.
Hmmmmmm, don't remember saying they are better than anywhere else, I just stated it is my favourite and I am lucky to live within "spitting" distance!
:-)))

I agree my favourite, after travelling here every month for the last 12 years, I upped and moved the family and now live only 20 minutes from Storey Arms. (Neath Valley)
I've been to Scotland, done the likes of Aonach Eagach and others. Done the Lakes -likes of Scafell and done Snowdonia (all of it 3000 route) and you can't compare them to each other. They all have their own interesting bits.
But if wanted, we could have a Pen y Fan meet. I'm happy to organise. Just post a thread or email me via the website.

Ok, I'm convinced !!
Well, I'm going to be in Hereford on Friday anyway, so it seems like a good idea.
Can someone give me a lead on a campsite as a good start point for Pen y Fan
 ok tony i apologise.
Not after an apology Ray, no need, I just didn't want to be misunderstood!
;-))

I've put a thread on about doing a walk up Pen y Fan so if anyone is interested it's link is :- http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/forum/forummessages.asp?dt=&UTN=13009&last=1&V=8&SP=
Hope to see you out there.

Sorry it may be late but in relation to campsites.
I know the one by Talybont Resevoir is good, its just south of Aber Village G/R SO 105208. Its cheap and it has hot water and toilets but its a long way to Pen y Fan if you walk it but its a good walk around the escarpment.
There is also a campsite in Pencelli G/R SO 093247 shown on OS maps but I have never used this one so can't comment.
I have to say that the other option could be a bit of wild camping but whatever you do have a great time.

I am due to stay at Pencelli camp site in July/August. Have planned a week away to camp and walk in the BB's. Looking forward to coming eyeball to eyeball with Pen y Fan! I've heard Pencelli campsite is very highly rated. It's also in my AA caravan & campsite book. It's won several awards and the facilities sound smashing. Their website is www.pencelli-castle.co.uk
Their prices are quite reasonable too for the facilities they offer. It sounds a more 'comfortable' site than others, so i won't miss my little luxuries and will still be able to have showers etc.
Following my recent marriage break up i'm sort of on the look out for a new place to live and i certainly expect to check out where-ever i may roam (so to speak) and i have to say i'd be quite keen on taking up residence near the BB's too.

I was in the Culin last week, then went over do do one of my usual walks in the brecon beacons today and expected it to be a bit of a let down. It wasn't, they're still good. The only thing they lack is crags, but that's part of their charm I guess.

My girlfiend & I are heading to the BBs later in August (before going to the Green Man Festival) we're planning on doing Pen Y Fan, but I think the wikipedia article scared her a bit: "Pen Y Fan has claimed large numbers of casualties ranging from inexperienced hill walkers and climbers to highly trained special forces troops... has earned the infamous title of being the most dangerous peak in Wales"!!
The photos I've seen of the mountain don't appear so bad, am I underestimating it?
The "highly trained special forces troops," reference was to an SAS Captain who died on the slopes of Corn Ddu back in the seventies. He was on a night exersise in the middle of a January snowstorm when most people would have given ANY mountain a wide berth!!!
Penyfan is one of the "easier" of "decent" mountains and WELL visited at all times of year, particularly from the Storey Arms route. They don't call it the "M4" or the "Tourist route" for nothing !!
In the milder months, it is a good "family" trip, providing that the persons are reasonably fit and they take all the "normal" precuations necessary in such places!
I have just looked at the "Wikipedia" references and having lived in the area all my life, and been a member of a Search & Rescue organisation there, I am at a loss as to how they can describe it as " having earned the infamous title of being the most dangerous peak in Wales"!!
I would like to know what research they base that conclusion on. North Wales peaks have by far the most recorded incidents of a serious nature, with Snowdon the obvious top ranker in this respect.
I thought that on line encyclopedias were mean't to reflect accuracy, not speculative and sensational quotes??
wikipedia's content is driven by contributers, don't know where you go the notion it has to be accurate! ;-)
On a related note, would folks recommend the YHA (Llwyn y Celyn) nearby?

I like the look of that festival Alex, let us know if it's good or not.
