 Dave you missed a bit!
Always start with the direct route up Kirk Fell, follow the fence for that nice little path down to Black Sail Pass
Always leave the car at Overbeck and get the 2-mile walk over with first, you'll be glad you did when you get to the bottom of Yewbarrow

Andy, I prefer the start up to the col between Kirk Fell and Gable myself - and leaving the car at Overbeck depends on there being space at the car park when yopu finally get there after a typical OM meet friday night ;-)
I wasn't that bothered about the walk back anyway, still smiling from getting such an unusually clear view all the way round and catching the colours at their best.

Whats the route directly up the front of kirkfell like? ive often thought about it but opted for the red gully around the back after walking round via black sail pass

Moggy, it's the sort of route you should take someone you really don't want to go walking with you again. It's a constant steep slog with little of interest. There are only three small points at which the angle eases sufficiently to take a break.

fantastic i shall keep that one in mind, there were acouple of people walking up it at the weekend we we were heading up to sprinkling tarn

Thanks Andy, it's nice to have both Kirk Fell and the High Level Route descriptions on here as an alternative. It's always hard knowing just what to include and what to leave out in my routes, and make them the right length for the majority of members (plus the space constraints of course). It's also rare for me to get a day where I got better weather for photos than you :D

No problem Dave, I know you have to publish in advance what you think the "average" walker can cope with and I'm free to go where I want and tell you afterwards what it was like.
I have my fair share of "no photos today" thank you

Lightweights! The best way to do the Mosedale horseshoe is clockwise, ascending up to 'fell height' via Dore Head Screes. At the top, nip off to the left and bag Yewbarrow if you like, otherwise continue around up to Red Pike and around to Kirk Fell/Great Gable.
Ascending Dore Head Screes is absolutely fantastic! My eyes were blurry for about 70% of the ascent, it was that steep!! LOL.

 Yeah OK done it :o)
I tell you what - I'm never going down the Dore Head thing.

Lightweight Michael, the best way round is from Eskdale via Slight Side, Scafell,Broad Stand Scafell Pike, Great Gable,Styhead, Kirk Fell, then back via Lingmell, Scafell Pike, Great Moss and Eskdale. And yes I've done it, but think it may be a bit much for the average walker.

Yeah Kirk Fell to Lingmell is a killer :o)
Not to mention nowhere near Mosedale

well obviously with Mosedale in between!

We descended Dore Head a few weeks ago having decided not to finish with Yewbarrow and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Mind you, the first time I went up Dore Head I didn't realise there was a path to the right of the screes which makes life considerably easier.

.jpg) Mosedale horseshoe, undoubtably one of the best rounds in the lakes, roadwalk at the beginning or end no matter, done it twice now either way. I like the sound of including kirkfell in as a variation' I've never been up kirkfell and it just looks a tremendous steep grassy slog ideal training for a scottish Munro bagging trip! Well worth doing for the views from the summit I should imagine.
