Following on from the " Need the Outdoor Designs phone number, please" thread... I've been trying to find out the correct length for the pole that supports the Outdoor Designs Massak Bivvy. OD say they can't help, as it's an old model and they haven't kept any records of it. Googling for it doesn't help much, either, although it does pick up a minor OM reference. If anyone here can help, I would be much obliged. Thanks in advance.

It seems pretty unimpressive that OD can't help! How old is the bivvy, Bearded Git?

BG

It's actual age is unknown, PW. I bought it last week, it was a discount clearance item which I couldn't refuse.
It does have a pole with it but it's not the original, the retailer didn't have the proper one, hence the knock-down price. The included pole is too long by about 8". I've got kit to trim the pole when I find out where to attack it. I'm assuming that the proper pole-length will be critical to the structural integrity of the unit.
Or maybe I should just make an educated guess and go for it.

What sort of overall pole length is it? Would it be worth spending a few quid on a pole repair kit thingy then butching that to find the optimum length before cutting your original pole? Could cost about ten quid but might be worth it in the long run.

Matt The supplied pole is 71 1/4" (1810mm). I may butcher the one I have just to find the right length, then make a titanium replacement as an experiment.
winhill I got the same results. Not much use. FWIW, the sailgb site has the wrong piccy with the right description.

 Update.
I decided to cast caution to the wind and make a lucky guess. Hacked 90mm off each end of the pole, deburred the cuts, wrapped the ends in ducktape for a bit of protection, put it in place... lo and behold - it fits perfectly. How jammy was that? :-)
Now I need a couple of rubber/plastic pole-caps to finish the job properly. Any suggestions?

 B&Q ?

 Hell, no!
I wasn't planning on spending any more! It's already cost me 76 notes.
I'm off to scavenge around the house...

 Problem solved!
I knew that those spare rubber buds from my iPod in-ear phones would come in handy for something. A perfect fit on 8.5mm dia poles.
Now it all needs field-testing. :-)

 Excellente! :)

BG, I'm sure Jonathon Ives (Apple Designer) would be overwhelmed to know that he's subconciously branching out into the camping industry!! Look out for the white tent with built in ipod dock in your local Blacks next season!!

 lol, Matt.
While I'm in such an creative mood, I think I'll try to make a lightweight sheep5h1t-burning stove, using parts from an old Landrover, some sticky-back plastic and a pair of Val's old knickers. :-)))
|
 |
What about the toilet rolls and washing up bottles - cut of top and bottom of old circular ones to make a narrow windshield for your sh*t-stove (not recommend for use with actual heat for obvious plastic vs flames reasons).
*I'm not saying your stove is rubbish :-S

BG - Obviously a case of size really does matter!
;o)

Lol! Good effort, Oot. Not sure it will be enough to salvage the thread though. ;-)

Go back to your lives, people, there's nothing to see here. Be on your way now, this is a crime-scene, we need to seal off the area right now.

 Spoil sport!
Edit: Should that be all one word?
