Just to add more confusion and making many current OS maps out of date. The Pack Horse Trust, with gov. support, have been actively rediscovering old lost pack horse trails/routes and getting them reinstated. Some of them are currently marked as footpaths, but will be upgraded to bridleways in new prints of the OS maps (not sure how often that happens).

Where are the links to the "Independent scientific research" that Ride to Roam refers to? Interesting site for sure.

The word"empirical" was a hyperlink.

I just supplied the sources for you to explore....

I walk, bike, backpack, do all sorts basically, and am tolerant towards all other fell-users (except the intolerant ones!). I don't bike over PFs but some bikers who run certain sites do advocate it.

"Interesting site" - very.

Heh, no worries. Was just being slightly pedantic in expecting it to cite some external sources.

And, I pretty much agree, I can't imagine responsible MTB'ers causing significantly more damage than anyone else.

JJ.

A "Mechanically propelled vehicle" as defined by section 34 RTA 1968 does NOT include "pedal cycles."

It refers to any vehicle powered by a motor or engine, and not human powered.

Section 189 then makes futher exceptions, including "electrically assisted pedal cycles."

Just getting back to the subject in question directly, the local ringleader and 'youngster' has removed his website which promoted the downhill track on Ilkley Moor and other local freeride sites, illegal or not. I hope that he and his friends can continue 'throwing' themselves down a hill (GB pretty much rules downhill worldwide, with Steve Peat and the Atherton Family). Maybe revisiting this site next summer when it has naturally repaired or visiting other local sites designed by singletraction.com will be give that buzz. Again, I'm not an experienced MTBer, so I'm not sure whether one site is comparable to another.

the local shop asking riders not to ride on the section of trail is not banning them... its simply asking cyclists not to, so that the land can recover. there is no banning happening...
isn't that a similar situation to snowdon (i think), where cyclists were expicitly asked NOt to ride it between certian hours, so the poor walkers aren't annoyed by them, but it was not a legal BAN.

also, as stated, cyclists are allowed to cycle there, thanks to bradford city council.

So can we locals ride our bikes on there legally then?

That's all I need to know. The OS map says "PFs not BWs so I've never ridden on there.

Yes you can ride legally on the Ilkley side of the moor, which is owned by Bradford council, the council states that cyclists can use the moor and have the same limitations as walkers.

there are no specific paths, but any paths marked as off limits for walkers will be off limits for cyclists

Good on you Guy@214 fells.  The outdoors isn't for the exclusive use of walkers.  There are good and bad examples in every outdoor activity so let's hear it for the good guys and target the bad - not a specific group.
