Personally, I'd avoid this area at weekends. There are a lot of scrambler bikes that razz around these moors illegally. In places this has caused very severe erosion. Even if you don't see the bikes the noise of them spoils the tranquiltiy of this superb wilderness.
Would that be the cafe by Pistyll Rhaeadre? Fantastic location, a beautiful setting and great walking to be had - as long as you don't mind bog (and trail bikes!)
That's the cafe. The bogs are great in winter when they're frozen. That's getting rarer too. I remember a particularly good Christmas day a few years ago when we went up the ridge - clear and frosty although not deep and crisp and even! There was only us and one other couple who were lugging a hamper up to the top. What a great way to celebrate Christmas!
Instead of getting to the ridge from Pistyll Rhaeadr or Tyn ny Fridd, you could come at it from the south west at Milltir Gerrig. There's a fair amount of boardwalk on the edge of the Berwyn nature reserve, otherwise it's a case of serious heather bashing - definitely not shorts territory.
Has anybody done the walk from LLangollen to Fairbourne starting on the Berwyns then westward to the Arrans, Cribin, Cadair Idris.
I've done the section west from B4391 via Foel Cwn Sian Llwy, Trum Y Sarn to Y groes Fagi, then on the landrover track to the summit of the minor road east of Foel Y Geifr, I could almost guarntee that one won't meet a soul on this route a good deal of this route is at lest 2000' level
I've noticed that they have fenced of the Berwyns west of the Wayfarer Memorial to prevent access for trial bikes, and they don't seem to go east towards Cerrig Coediog (593m) but they have ruin the top of Moel Fferna.
