Hi TGO people!

Been away a bit and just catching up with all my fave forums and magazines lying on the floor ... and ... as its Xmas ...

Just wanted to say thanks for the latest mag and the podcast number 6, hearing Cameron and Chris chatting about gear like the rest of us is very, very cool :-)

Always interested in the litenup section but was shocked to see the big picture in the Windwoods introduction.

That guy whittling a coke can with a knife seems to be using a Opinel knife which clearly isn't locked shut, and he's got a nasty glint in his eye as he's about stab the palm of his other hand with the point, once it slices clean through the can!!!

So interesting image, but not one promoting personal safety I feel. Shouldn't it have a 'don't try this at home kids' comment on it :-))

Anyway, thought I might say thanks to the team for your efforts this year. The magazine certainly is in tune with the new lightweight awareness, and the mix is as good as you are going to get it I guess. The new media podcast shows are a pleasure to listen to and you have to be congratulated on trying something so new and exciting. Don't know how you are going to top that in 2007, but please keep it coming is all I can say.

Pass on my thanks to podcast bob too. Don't know how it does it, but the last 12 months of podcasts has made those long business trips much more interesting.

Merry Christmas everybody at TGO.

Ooops... you are right, the Opinel knife doesn't look shut.

Blush.

But... erm... well... the man in the illustration is clearly an obsessive ultra-light backpacking madman hell bent on creating a featherweight alcohol stove from a coke can and obviously has but one thing on his mind. And it isn't the preservation of his fingers. Just look at those scratches! And anyway, look again at the nasty glint in his eyes. He has clearly gone past the point of help in his pursuit of all that is lightweight, and isn't to be triffled with or questioned...

A dangerous man...

Blush.

(And you won't catch me admitting that the illustration is based on a timed self-portrait photo or anything, but...)

;-)

Oh, was that bloke making a coke-can stove? I thought from the insane (rather than nasty) look in his eye that he was stabbing at the wasps that had flown into his can of coke!

Its in the new January TGO. A big double page image (goodness knows why) before you whittle your way through the Winwoods er ... editorial.

No reflection on Andrews creative image of 'how not to use a sharp knife' of course ;-) Of all the lightweight images they must have available, I can't see why one so big of a guy about to cut his thumb off was suitable to fill a double page!

Still that's creatives for you - different planet :->>>>>

What was interesting was the price winwoods are selling a Montane superfly for in the picture in the article! Where's me card ?

Ah, I see. Maybe it needs an article on how to use muscle counter-tensions to control hand tools...

Andrew, I was really impressed when I first saw that image. I just looked again to see the knife, and I'm still very impressed.

Thanks John. :)

And I'm still embarrassed about the knife though...

And still embarrassed that it wasn't clear he was manking a coke-can stove...

Oh well.

Shoot the illustrator, I say!

;)

I think he cut them off in an attempt to go ultra-ultra lightweight...
