Just seen the article about the new woman specific packs. They may claim these are the rolls royce of rucksacks but three hundred quid for a fifty litre rucksack - in lemon! - are they kidding??! Who would pay that - or dare I ask?

Who indeed! And it's a truly, disturbingly vile colour too.

My impression is that we pay over the odds for Arc'teryx in the UK (and Europe in general... I live in France and it's as bad here). I have seen their stuff on sale in many shops in Canada and the prices are above average for the styles, but not wildly. In the UK they seem to surpass just about everything else. For a 50 litre pack I'd take a nice POD or Haglofs and spend the other £150-200 on actually going out and using it!

I wouldn't spend £50 on a rucsack that colour, let alone £300! It has to be one of the most objectionably coloured pieces of kit I've ever seen.

I've got to admit, I'd pay that. I've bought Arc'teryx stuff before and it is worth it, superior stuff. And I am also a firm believer in "if you buy cheap you buy twice".

I've just worked out why they cost so much... it's fifty quid for the 'sac and £250 for the blinkers to protect yer eyes from that god awful yellow glow! Pass the sick bucket...

"I've got to admit, I'd pay that."
I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

 BK I'm with the crying.
<and I am also a firm believer in "if you buy cheap you buy twice".>
I own Lowe Alpine and Berghaus 'sacs these are cheap by comparison but just as well constructed. So why pay more?
As the saying goes, 'a fool and her/his money are easily parted.'

If it'a a hideous colour it's bound to appear in the sales eventually. My son loves Arc'teryx but won't (can't) pay the full price. Consequently he has some VERY bright orange jackets. Never mind 'though, it matches his hair

Seems weird to me, the price of equipment. My hardshell jacket was retailling about £220 in most places when it was first new. It's fairly technical, but nothing amazing. Now I consider that Osprey's top packs are around about the same price, it makes me wonder. Surely a pack made of carbon fiber, etc, etc is harder and more costly to design and produce than a jacket thats effectively made from sheets of plastic?
|
 |
...and a coat has a far larger potential market than a technical pack reducing the design and tooling costs per unit.

Price skimming - the cost of a new bit of kit is set at a higher level the 'reason' is to recoup R&D costs. A higher price has a cache of exclusivity that appeals to those who want to be seen as innovative...
The price usually drops when the product sales achieve a certain volume or not when the manufacturer realises that dreadfully colour outdoor kit isnt going to shift!
Helen - you only have to visit Rock Bottom in Betws y to see how misguided some colour schemes are!

actually theres not a lot of price differnce between the uk and us prices £16 on the 75 and £34 on the 65 still expensive in anyones book
