Thanks Darren, you've spawned a news article :-)
I don't know about the 'handfull of dreamers' bit mind, Russel B is one of the most experienced Everest expeditioners out there. Should be a bit of a contrast with the British Army expedition anyway...

Jon, no probs. I'm betting on less drunklen brawls on a Friday and Saturday night after closing time, to be the main difference.

Really must get sky, i miss out on far to many of these programs!

.jpg) I too, have yet to discover the discovery channel.

Isn't this about the time when 40 "climbers" walked past a dying man ? According to the Times (saturday), this series contains film of this man dying - it just redefines the word "scum" !

I believe they did get footage of David Sharp but they honored his family's request not to show it.

moggs, you sooo neeeeeeeed Sky Plus.

.jpg) They did not look like scum whilst helping the indian man down the hill. Programme seemed a little drawn out, too much "here I am in my tent at ABC" perhaps the US market which it appears aimed for need to remind viewers what they are watching every few minutes. Some stuff was quite good though, a bit suprised that they left the big fella with the steel plates to his own devices so much (and then bollocked him). Is it really that ruthless or was it just for the cameras. A lot of people climb Everest , it looked a bit like Striding edge with all the q,s.:)

That's strange, jonno; didn't see the prog as I was out, but when we went up Helvellyn the other week (via Swirral Edge), I commented that the queues going up in the snow towards Striding Edge looked just like pictures from Everest!! ;-)

This program has already appeared over here in America and it was quite enjoyable. In regards to the man that was left to die, from what I understand (what was portrayed in the tv show) rescue would have risked more people's lives "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." a man once said. People need to realize that hindsight is 20/20 and that climbing at times is very utilitarian.

Yes, there's always a suitable platitude to explain the unspeakable. I guess it really depends on what kind of person you are but it must mar the experience a little by walking past dying people. I know I'm being judgemental and everest is unlike many other places but I still consider it to be a sad indictment of "tourist mountaineering".

I haven't seen it yet, although I set the video so will watch tonight but for all those that did not and want to know more including footage on the web. Here's the discovery channel links everest beyondEnjoy
