Camphylobacter(?) is I think a local delicacy!  It's why one Dartmoor reservoir no longer supplies water to the local town, however you do build up a resisitance!

I have just been reading this again.  I have Memory Maps 5 (not Multimaps; doh) with 3d data etc.  It is great for planning routes etc, then printing them off.  An advantage of this is the 3d fly-through where you get a feel for the route and exactly how it will look.  I did this last summer when walking to Scaffel Pike from the Old Dungeon Ghyl in the langdale valley, didn't need to refer to maps once (just followed the crowds!).  I have also got OL28 to refer to just in case and I have also got GPS on my SE C905; if I get lost I shall need shooting!

When we go to Churchstow we turn off the A38 onto the A3121 at Wrangaton.  That's where I shall be dropped off.  There is a path there (through the golf course initially) that picks up Two Moors Way at Glascombe Ball.  I intend following that as far as Buckland Ford then head to the Avon Dam.  Is camping near Petre's pit an option?  Whilst doing this is there anything either en-route or nearby worth looking out for?

Any tips will be gratefully received.

With two-year-olds you obviously HAVE to be careful about water. Worth remembering that water at UK altitudes is completely drinkable (from a bacteriological pov) as soon as the water hits boiling point.

I'm really pleased you're thinking of doing this. My daughters wild camped with me (although we never called it this) all through their lives and I'm just waiting to take my grand-daughters (2 & 3).

Any risks are far, far outweighed by the benefits.

CryptospOridium - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptosporidium

Nasty parasite - I always treat water when hiking, fast flowing stream or not. I don't see any advantage in taking the risk.

A nice northern route is Warren House pub (PL20 6TA) to Fernworthy Forest, through it onto Sittaford Tor then down to Postbridge, finally a slow road walk back to the car. It just gets you into the open camping zone and is usually very quiet (save for the short early and late road section). I'll leave you to work out the specifics as that's half the fun : )
