I'm sure anyone who reads this will be thinking of the man's family and friends, and maybe of ourselves too, the thread is very fine sometimes...

A salutory reminder too that greasy rock can be a difficult opponent even on easier routes - I remember having a very slippery and awkward time on Hall's Fell Ridge a couple of Novembers ago and taking much longer than I thought to get along it than on a previous trip on dry rock.

I was on Blencathra on Sunday with friends and watched the helicopter winch the casualty aboard. I am deeply saddened to read of this fatality. Yes, it can be a very fine thread indeed ..

Greasy rock is as bad as ice - I always carry a pair of old cut off socks with me in the winter - with these pulled over the front two thirds of the boot the grip on slippery rock is surprisingly good.

Yes- I remember it being really greasy and slippery when I did it and that was in August. I wouldn't fancy it in wet weather. Very sad.

I've had a walk up Hall's Fell ridge in April 2005 (snow and verglass) with a club (no names) which I thought was out of order without ice axes and knowledge of self-arrest.

Even the easy scrambles should not be underestimated. Esp. Hall's fell which has a nasty run out to the east.

I once came within a whisker of serious injury in that area trying to scramble on wet granite in atrocious weather and only a last gasp effort to extract myself from a precarious perch prevented me eventually getting tired and dropping from a great height with the obvious consequences.
Fortunately I was not alone but a valuable lesson was learned.
